Poet's performance felt more deeply to quartet's music

Yusef Komunyakaa's voice is like a cello when he reads, deep and melodious and blended. The Pulitzer Prize winner and former IU faculty member returned to Bloomington Saturday night to filled seats at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. To many of them, he was already a god. Joining him was the Susie Ibarra Quartet, a percussion-based jazz ensemble.

Man awaiting trial on charges of helping to hide body dies Thursday

CROWN POINT, Ind. -- An Indiana man who died after Chicago police used a stun gun to subdue him was awaiting trial on charges that he helped hide the body of man whose decomposed remains were found buried two years ago in a farm field. The parents of Michael Denvit said Friday the news that Ronald Alan Hasse had died in Chicago makes them wonder if they will ever find out how their son was killed.

The separation of power between university and state is not always a clear one. Senate Bill 369, a proposal that would allow legislators to determine state universities' financial directions, is currently up for debate. Indiana senators consider this bill every two years, and due to opposition, the bill likely will fail again.

NEW YORK -- The stars of Hollywood joined the people of Harlem to bid farewell Saturday to actor and activist Ossie Davis, filling a Manhattan church with laughter and tears as a parade of admirers recalled his integrity, courage and devotion to family. Friends, fans and family members crowded into the Riverside Church for the funeral, gazing at a video screen bearing his picture that was hung above an altar.

Even as a kid, I knew that having a father consistently in my life made me an exception to the social norm. The terms "child support" and "deadbeat" found their way into my lexicon long before I heard the one hit wonder of B Rock and the Bizz, "That's Just My Baby Daddy."

IU enters a crucial weekend with two matches against the cream of the Big Ten crop beginning Saturday. The Hoosiers will begin against No. 12 Michigan State at the University Gym. The Spartans have dominated the series, owning an overall record of 44-17-3, including the last six in a row. IU hasn't scored a victory against State in Bloomington since 1991.
