A mother's Love

Her voice rang out cool and smooth against the sunshine that speckled Dunn Meadow: Peace is flowing like a river, Flowing out of you and me. No one can take away our pain, Nor bring our soldiers back to life again. Mia Lorraine's song flowed over the small crowd sitting in the shade of one of the meadow's trees, as heads nodded softly in agreement. "People ask how many soldiers have lost their lives in Iraq," said Lorraine, of Sebastopol, Calif., a member of Military Families Speak Out. "I say all of them."

Woman steals jar of relief donations

MUNCIE -- A woman who purchased ribs and a salad from a restaurant walked away with something more -- a jar stuffed with donations for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Damon's Grill owner Rick Sutton said the jar, which was stolen Sunday, held at least $100.

2 arrested after post-party altercation

Police arrested two men late Friday night suspected of brandishing weapons during an altercation outside a party in the 1200 block of North Dunn Street. Jameson Cassidy, 20, was preliminarily charged with intimidation with a deadly weapon, criminal confinement and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and Andrew J. Franklin, 19, faced a preliminary charge of intimidation with a deadly weapon.

Buying at the 'Black Market'

Now you can buy a candy bar or a lottery ticket while simultaneously stepping back in time. Downtown Bloomington has a new late-night convenience store that provides a glimpse of its history. Inside the Black Mercantile, on the corner of Seventh and Walnut streets, the colors of shiny candy wrappers pop out against red brick walls that have existed for nearly 200 years. Neon signs glow inside windows that look as though they could've been taken out of a black and white movie; outside, you might half expect to see horse-drawn carriages rather than cars.

Heart disease blamed in death

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Thomas Herrion had heart disease and showed evidence of previous heart trouble when he collapsed and died after a preseason game last month, an official in the Denver County coroner's office said Tuesday.

Club team finally coming full swing

Junior Matt Ostrega's vision of an IU club baseball team, and ten months of hard work creating one, will come to fruition Tuesday. Club baseball, for the most part, is similar to that of IU's varsity baseball team. Like college ball, the team carries 25 to 30 players on its traveling roster, plays other college clubs and is open to all full-time students.

Club offers runners forum to compete

Running alone last year was no fun for senior Ben Bartley. He was discouraged because although IU has well-respected and experienced track and cross-country teams, there was no organization for students who wanted to run for fun. Some students who wanted to learn proper training techniques of running and to have a forum to compete had nowhere to turn. Bartley and junior Jacqui Davis decided to do something about it.

Team attracts riders with animals

Hurricane washes out the Green Wave

DALLAS - Tulane athletic teams displaced from their New Orleans campus by Hurricane Katrina will be based this fall at five different universities. The Green Wave student-athletes will live and attend classes at schools in Texas and Louisiana. The teams will stay together and play under the Tulane banner.

Porter grabs 2 picks in 41-10 win

Sept. 6, 2004 Similar to this past weekend, the IU football and men's soccer teams each start off their seasons in grand fashion. Freshman cornerback Tracy Porter leads the football team to a 41-10 win with two interceptions, including one he returned for a 96-yard touchdown. On the soccer field, junior midfielder Brian Plotkin plays an integral offensive role as IU wins both of its weekend matches.
