Tough first weekend for Americans
TURIN, Italy -- It was hardly a lost weekend for the U.S Olympic team. The good news was just hard to find among all the disappointments.

Sunday was Senior Day for the IU women's basketball team. It was only fitting, then, that star senior guard Cyndi Valentin made the biggest contribution in IU's 60-46 victory over Northwestern.
After starting the year with high aspirations, the losing woes continued for the IU women's water polo team this weekend as the 2-6 squad lost three of its four matches at the Triton Invitational in San Diego.
The IU women's track team seemed to ride the momentum of its season-opening home stand to have many athletes place well at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend. "When you compete with the best schools in the country, you want to compete well," said associate head coach and sprints coach Ed Beathea. "I think the meet served its purpose to prepare us for conference."
The IU men's track and field team traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend to compete against some of the nation's premier programs at the annual Tyson Invitational. Unhampered by the sluggishness that often accompanies traveling for meets, the men's squad posted six top-10 finishes at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Please, all of you just keep it down. I can't take any more of this. It's making my temples throb. All I've been getting for the past four days have been e-mails, phone calls, instant messages and even Facebook.com messages listing the reasons Mike Davis must be fired immediately.
The Iowa Hawkeyes might want to consider taking a page out of their coach's book when it comes to free throw shooting.
Life's troubles can be notorious for their peculiar timing. The day after rumors began surfacing about IU coach Mike Davis resigning, he was mysteriously absent from pregame introductions. But before the rumor mill could spin out of control, word came that Davis was home ill. After more than two weeks of protests, anger and violence surrounding purportedly offensive caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, the uproar has continued to spread throughout the world and even to the IU community. "I'm mad that they even showed him, and then associated him and Muslims with terrorists," said junior Bashar Aburashed, who was born and raised in Saudi Arabia. "It would offend any Muslim."
With only a couple of hours to go before the Miss IU pageant, the setup is typical. With curlers in their hair and mascara wands in their hands, the girls hover in front of the mirrors. The atmosphere is one of nervous excitement. The picture is what some might predict from a beauty pageant, apart from one element: food. "It's food time!" one contestant said, as she simultaneously applied her makeup. "Let's do this."

Love may be blind -- but colorblind? Not so much.
I don't know if these columns leave any impression beyond the final sentence. But, if so, you might have noted that every year I write something snarky about Valentine's Day -- something bitter, mean-spirited, nowhere near "in the spirit of things" ...
The New York Times reported Friday that the Commission on the Future of Higher Education, a board appointed by President Bush and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, is working on a report, due in August, that will likely recommend more standardized testing.
Last week, the IDS ran a story with the headline "Assault reports up, officials not worried." Dean of Students Dick McKaig admitted, "We do have a problem, as most campuses do, with sexual assault." Other officials, including IU Police Department Lt. Jerry Minger and Carol McCord, assistant dean for women's affairs, voiced their belief that the jump in reports of sexual assault is more a result of increased reporting, rather than a result of an increase in assaults.
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Shiite lawmakers chose incumbent Ibrahim al-Jaafari to be Iraq's new prime minister Sunday even though his current government has been criticized for not dealing effectively with the Sunni-led insurgency or rebuilding the nation's crumbling infrastructure.
NEW YORK -- A major storm slammed the mid-Atlantic and Northeast states on Sunday with nearly two feet of windblown snow, nearing record levels as it blacked out thousands of customers and shut down air travel from Washington to Boston.
WASHINGTON -- Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.
