Bush back on campaign trail; Kerry in limbo

WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush headed west to stump for Republican candidates Thursday after reaffirming his confidence that the GOP will maintain control of both the Senate and House in next week's elections. "I don't believe it's over until everybody votes," Bush said Wednesday in an Oval Office interview. "And I believe that people are concerned about the amount of taxes they pay, and I know many people are concerned about whether or not this country is secure against attack."

10-year-old girl dies after rabies infection

A 10-year-old girl who was being treated for the first confirmed case of rabies in Indiana since 1959 has died. Shannon Carroll of Bourbon, Ind., died Thursday morning at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis hospital spokeswoman Jo Ann Klooz said. Carroll was hospitalized in early October after being bitten in June by a rabid bat, health officials said. More than 30 relatives, friends and classmates of the girl were offered injections to prevent the spread of the disease.

Missing Indiana girl found dead in Cass County

A man paroled in March after serving more than 26 years for killing a Kansas boy was expected to be charged with murder in the death of a 16-year-old northern Indiana girl, a prosecutor said Thursday. Investigators found the body of Stephanie Wagner in a northwestern Cass County field Wednesday night. The suspect in her death, Danny R. Rouse, 51, a dishwasher at the same restaurant where she worked, told them where to look and confessed to killing her, police said. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

Warrant issued for local tanning salon owner after girl complains

The Bloomington Police Department issued a warrant Thursday for a local tanning salon owner for inappropriate contact with juvenile females. Jeffrey Lewis Wright, 49, is a convicted sex offender and owner of Spring Break Tanning, 820 W. 17th St. Wright was arrested Oct. 16 during a traffic stop on warrant for voyeurism. The warrant was the result of a complaint Aug. 24 by a female employee at his tanning salon, said BPD Detective Sgt. David Drake, reading from a probable cause affidavit.

Long-time residents of Monroe County vie for seat on Council

With Trent Jones' County Council seat up for grabs in the 2006 election, two candidates are vying for his spot. Republican Jim Billingsley is running for County Council in District 2 this year. Billingsley has been a Bloomington resident since he was an infant and has been interested in politics for some time. He ran for state legislator, unsuccessfully, in 2002.

Long-time residents of Monroe County vie for seat on Council

Long-time Monroe County resident Charles Newmann is running on the Democratic ticket for District 2 county council. A 1969 graduate of IU, he holds a Bachelor's degree in Zoology. He then went on to serve in the Army for 28 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He's since been involved in local government, first in 1999 when he was appointed to the board of zoning appeals, and then to the land use planning commission.

IU senior takes on 6-year incumbent in House race

Matt Pierce feels the Indiana General Assembly has lost its way. Since his election to the State Representative for District 61 seat in 2000, his main goal has been to help get the state on the right track, reversing some of the bad decisions he said they made. "One of the problems is the representative leaders in the General Assembly are not asserting themselves as an independent branch," Pierce said. "They've pretty much become a rubber stamp for Gov. Mitch Daniels." Pierce said it is important for the legislature to ask hard questions, in response to the proposals of the governor.

IU senior takes on 6-year incumbent in House race

Adrianne Dunlap not only wants to serve the students of IU by holding a seat in the statehouse, but, as a student herself, she wants to be the political voice for her generation. Dunlap, originally from Noblesville, Ind., is a senior at IU, majoring in English. While many have put down her lack of experience, she thinks it is a benefit to her campaign.

Colts, Patriots continue rivalry with showdown Sunday

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Peyton Manning versus Tom Brady. The unbeaten Indianapolis Colts versus the New England Patriots, who have only one loss. The hype versus the reality. There are plenty of subplots to Sunday night's game between two of the NFL's best teams -- Adam Vinatieri's first against the team for which he kicked two Super-Bowl-winning field goals, Manning's struggles against the Patriots and Brady's growing comfort with his new receivers.

Hoosiers head down to Texas for battle with pair of top teams

The IU men's swimming and diving team will travel this weekend to Austin, Texas, to challenge No. 4 University of Texas and No. 6 University of California in a dual meet. The Hoosiers, coming off a weekend during which they split meets against Northwestern and Arizona State, are looking to build on their 2-1 record.

IU hoping to protect perfect record during weekend matches

The IU women's swimming and diving team has gotten off to a hot start, racing out to a 3-0 record. The No. 17 Hoosiers will put their unblemished record on the line as they travel to Austin, Texas, to face No. 11 Texas Saturday. The Longhorns are 1-1, with a loss to No. 6 Stanford University Oct. 27 and a win against the University of Nebraska Oct. 12. Texas finished second in the Big 12 Relays Oct. 13.

IU suffers 2-1 defeat to Wolverines, early exit from Big Ten Tournament

The IU women's soccer team exited the Big Ten Tournament early Thursday night after losing to Michigan 2-1 at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. The Hoosiers got on the board first with a goal in the 16th minute of play; however, the Wolverines rallied to overcome the deficit, spelling the end of IU's 2006 Big Ten season.

Trustees to discuss IU president search

The IU board of trustees is scheduled to discuss IU's progress on the search to find the next leader of the University and will vote on a number of new degree programs and building approvals at its business meeting today at the IU-Purdue University Fort Wayne campus.

Students commemorate holiday in cemetery

Passersby on Fee Lane Thursday night might have noticed a crowd of students standing around the cemetery in front of Foster Residence Hall. More than 40 IU students gathered together despite the evening's cool temperatures to learn more about Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.
