Smart infrastructure

·

Spotting a Smart Car in Indiana is a lot like watching a horse and buggy navigate a street filled with automobiles. Both evoke the same sequence of emotions: shock, amusement, admiration, joy.

Gay is not the new black

When the cover of the national gay magazine The Advocate declared in November that “Gay is the New Black,” countless people of color – many of them GLBT – decried the statement as offensive, if not downright racist. It was nearly impossible, as a politically engaged GLBT person, to miss the outrage expressed on blogs and in media across the country.

Pace’s problem

Gen. Peter Pace is entitled to his beliefs, so long as he expresses them as private beliefs. He loses that right when he expresses them as part of an organization whose beliefs are broader. I did not see the article; I do not know in what context he uttered them.

Master Plan we can be proud of

IU’s Bloomington campus has long been considered one of the most beautiful in the nation. With lush greenery and picturesque limestone buildings, it is a great thing to look at. But as any weathered student will tell you, it can be a hassle to navigate.

Changing grassroots

·

Activists stood side by side with “Obama” painted across their chests. An older man proclaimed that when it came to Barack Obama’s campaign, “this is different.” Pictures of campaigners standing next to visiting politicians were intercut with Joe Biden talking about how “this may be the last chance to reclaim the America we love.”

New threads of life

·

Led by the late Budd Stalnaker, a former textiles professor, the IU textiles graduate program molded creative artists for more than 40 years. When Stalnaker died in 2006, the program did, too.

Booths focus on positive body images

·

Students can learn to appreciate their bodies through a day of events focused on positive self-image. Counseling and Psychological Services staff will have different booths today at multiple locations around campus as part of Celebrate Your Body Day. Activities include “fat talk,” which demonstrates how students criticize their bodies. Students will then be able express on notecards what they appreciate about their bodies. These notecards will be put up for a display.
