Andre Watts

IU pianist receives highest presidential arts award in U.S.

Eminent classical pianist André Watts, the Jack I. and Dora B. Hamlin Endowed Chair in Music at the Jacobs School of Music, has been chosen as a recipient for the 2011 National Medal of Arts. The award was established by Congress in 1984 and is considered the highest honor given to artists by the U.S. government.

The Bloomington Playwrights Project’s newest musical production, “The Boy in the Bathroom,” that will be performed Feb. 16-18, tells the story of David, a college student with obsessive-compulsive disorder who refuses to come out of his bathroom.

Since 1976, in their small town nestled among the cornfields of Indiana’s western border, Dana natives have preserved their identity as Ernie Pyle's hometown through a museum in his childhood home. But in recent years, Dana residents have felt the pressures of fading historical fame.

It’s not easy to tell somebody how you feel about them. Love, lust or aggravation — sometimes the right gift can communicate everything you want to say. On the brink of IU’s most successful regular season record in four years, I thought it fitting to give a few Hoosiers Valentine’s presents.

IU beats Maryland late for 5th place finish

The No. 9 Hoosiers trailed No. 17 Maryland by two goals entering the final quarter of the Triton Invitational on Sunday. Due to a five-goal performance in the final stanza, however, the Hoosiers defeated the Terrapins and claimed fifth place in the tournament in La Jolla, Calif., with an 11-10 victory.

Pushing the pipeline

Republicans, with some Democratic support, are trying to force construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline despite a denial by the U.S. State Department of the permit allowing the project to cross the border from Canada before making its way to Texas.
