Severe drought in Monroe County equates to loss in local yield, economy

As of June 5, the Indiana State Climate Office declared 68.8 percent of Monroe County in a state of severe drought. Farmers are utilizing a number of strategies to avoid reliving the disaster of 1988. Indiana lost $40 million in crop-related expenditures that year after the largest wildfires in U.S. history started after a drought in Yellowstone National Park.

A Bloomington artist for almost 40 years, Steffey McQueen completed her undergraduate and graduate studies in printmaking at IU. Her newest exhibit, “Nature Play,” is on display at the By Hand Gallery in downtown Bloomington.

Humanitarians to deliver supplies to Cuba

In opposition to the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba, for 23 years Caravanistas have delivered humanitarian aid from the U.S. to the people of Cuba, despite the commercial, economic and financial block on Cuba imposed in 1960. The embargo, enacted during President John F. Kennedy’s administration, was an attempt to oust Cuban President Fidel Castro and his communist regime.

Cyclists plan 160-mile trek across Ind.

Beginning at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College outside Terre Haute, bicyclists from around the country will cycle to Richmond, Ind., in the Ride Across Indiana beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, July 21.
