In what is now known as the worst drought in the U.S. in nearly a half-century, farmers across the state are preparing for substantial financial losses as their barren fields struggle to produce crops. While farmers are expected to feel the heat the most, the drought will impact all consumers.

For all of these, chess has become the only sport in which I can still call a night well spent even after straight losses. Sometimes, rather than a meaningless win, I’d prefer a loss after intense plotting, painstaking struggle and grand escaping. It’s the hard-edged experiences like this we crave and think about on our deathbed.

If you wanted to move to a big city after graduation, let’s hope it has a good homeless shelter. Between paying off student loans, credit card debt and stuffing your face with cheap vendor food, you’ll be lucky if you can afford to pay rent without having a second job.

Hippy nonsense?

My most recent adventure was up to the Quetico provincial park in Canada, where after 22 hours of weary driving our group finally arrived on an island in the middle of Nym Lake, where our adventure began. Now I don’t know if I was delirious from taking the 1 to 4 a.m. driving shift or what, but when I got there, I thought we had found that little slice of heaven that cheap songwriters always drone on about.
