IU summer orientation continues through August

Summer orientation is the largest of four New Student Orientation programs for students and their parents, according to the Office of First Year Experience’s website. It is attended by most students who enter IU in the fall. It is a two-day experience designed to help incoming freshmen navigate campus and learn what resources are available to them.

Bringing mental illness ‘out of the shadows’

On June 3, the Obama administration welcomed a National Conference on Mental Health to the White House. Pescosolido said she believed part of the conference was to correct the misinformed image that people involved in mass shootings suffer from mental illness.

On June 7, IU announced IU administrator and education professor Barbara A. Bichelmeyer has been named interim chancellor at IU Southeast, according to a press release. Her new position will take effect July 1.

McRobbie recommends tuition increases to Board of Trustees

On Friday, May 24, IU President Michael McRobbie recommended that the University’s Board of Trustees increase tuition and fee rates for Indiana resident undergraduate students by an average of 1.75 percent each of the next two academic years, according to a press release.

Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Sonya Stephens, who served since January 2009, has been selected to become the next vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty for Mount Holyoke College. IU was recently recognized as a 2013 Laureate by IDG Enterprise’s Computerworld Honors Program, according to a press release. The annual award program honors visionary information technology applications that encourage positive social, economic and educational change. IU earned the distinction for the eTexts initiative and recent wireless network upgrade to ensure reliable, secure access to digital materials, according to the release.

Kinsey Reporter mobile app re-released on Wednesday

The Kinsey Institute and the School of Informatics and Computing have joined together to create a mobile app, now available for Apple and Android mobile platforms, for collecting and reporting anonymous data regarding sexual activity, public displays of affection, female hormonal birth control use and effects, sexual fetishes, flirting and other intimate behaviors.

2 Showalter fish damaged in theft attempts

Around 4 and 5 a.m. Sunday morning, two separate attempts were made to steal two fish from the IU Showalter Fountain. Alarms on the fish alerted the IU Police Department to the tampering, allowing them to make it to the fountain in time to stop the theft efforts.
