LONDON -- Kenneth Branagh is returning to the London stage for the first time in more than a decade. The National Theater announced Wednesday that the actor and director will star in "Edmond," a David Mamet play that's being revived at the National this summer.

CBS and Fox fight for No. 1 spot

NEW YORK -- With a week to go in the February ratings "sweeps" period, Fox is poised for its first-ever victory among television viewers ages 18 to 49. CBS is leading among all viewers during this period, where ratings are watched closely to set advertising rates, with Fox and NBC neck-and-neck for second.

Michigan aims to diversify orchestra

Aaron Dworkin loves classical music. He began playing violin at age 5 and hasn't stopped. But while majoring in violin performance at the University of Michigan, he had a revelation. After being introduced to the music of black composer William Grant Still, Dworkin approached a professor with the idea of a competition exclusively for black and Hispanic string players.

New radio station formed

Designers support health campaign with red dresses

The National Institute of Health and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) took full advantage of the press received from New York City's "Seven on 6th" Fashion Week in order to promote their campaign against heart disease. Sally McDonough is the account director for Ogiby, who partnered with the NHLBI to get designers to donate at least one red dress to be on display at the Mercedes Benz fashion week.

Afghan refugee film takes Golden Bear top prize

BERLIN -- This year's Berlin Film Festival had a pointed political message, with disturbing themes such as genocide and refugees that reflected the influence of global tensions since Sept. 11 and the threat of a new war on Iraq.

Designs of the past return

Uneventful and lacking surprises seemed to be the main characteristics of the Fall 2003 Fashion Week in New York City. The old saying "New Yorkers are more anxious to leave social events than they are to go to them" proved true. The week started off slow and gradually declined as time went on. Recent articles in Women's Wear Daily and in The New York Times have criticized American designers and the dismal mood of this week's collections for the upcoming season. Most critics have cut the designers some slack, attributing the lack of frill to the recent economic decline and the code orange terrorist threat New York was under the entire week. I was not surprised -- most people forget that fashion is directly affected by politics, the economy and social unrest. No matter what state the economy is in, the looks on the runway were certain to be conservative.

SoFA Gallery exhibit celebrates women

RENTON, Wash. -- The remains of rock musician Jimi Hendrix have been moved to a new granite and marble memorial that is nearing completion in this Seattle suburb. NEW YORK -- Paul Friedman, the executive vice president of ABC News and top deputy to News chief David Westin, said Wednesday he's stepping away from management to teach and produce news.

Monday's "Joe Millionaire" (8 p.m. EST, Fox) will find Evan Marriott deciding between Zora, the substitute teacher, and Sarah, a former bondage-video queen the show identifies as "Asst. to Mortgage Broker." They are the finalists from a field of 20 lovelies who began vying for Evan's heart and the $50 million they were told would come with it.

Hip-hop group calls off Pepsi boycott

NEW YORK -- A hip-hop network founded by music impresario Russell Simmons Tuesday called off a planned boycott of Pepsi products, saying it had reached an agreement with the soft drink giant. The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, which had threatened the boycott after Pepsi pulled an ad featuring rapper Ludacris, said the deal calls for Pepsi to make a multimillion-dollar donation over several years to the rapper's foundation.

They don't dream big. Their ultimate mission is to put art everywhere -- in galleries, on buildings, in people's homes. For now, they'll settle for two billboards. Your Art Here -- a public art billboard project, was created by four friends in August 2002. Recent IU graduate Owen Mundy together with senior photography majors Shana Berger, Alyssa Hill and Nathan Purath wanted to create a forum for visual communication. They chose billboards as their medium to connect to Bloomington residents and IU students.

Simpsons celebrate 300th episode

LOS ANGELES -- The characters may be yellow but "The Simpsons" hasn't mellowed as it marks its 300th episode Sunday. If anything, the Fox animated comedy born in 1989 is more boldly iconoclastic in the 21st century. Given that timidity is programmed into television's very DNA, how does "The Simpsons" thrive?

Networks say no to 'Sex and the City'

NEW YORK -- Three of the four biggest broadcast networks said they have no interest in airing a sanitized version of HBO's Emmy Award-winning comedy "Sex and the City." The fourth network, CBS, would not comment on the possibility Monday. Published reports, first in Variety on Friday, said HBO had approached executives at ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox about airing an edited "Sex and the City" as a prime time series, starting this fall.

'Chicago,' 'Gangs of New York' lead nominees for 75th Oscars

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- "Chicago," the musical adapted from the stage hit about two murderous women competing for tabloid celebrity, led Academy Award contenders Tuesday with 13 nominations, including best picture. Other best-picture nominees for the 75th annual Oscars were "Gangs of New York," "The Hours," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" and "The Pianist."
