When you go to the ballet, you might think of the many different aspects of the spectacle, including the costumes, music, lighting and, of course, the graceful dancers themselves.

It is 8 p.m. Instead of doing her usual primping for a Thursday night out, Allison Baumann, a sophomore in Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at IU, is sitting with her sorority sisters in their TV lounge watching "The O.C."

Students with the need and desire to create through music have found their way to IU's music composition program. They yearn for creativity and originality, and for finding freedom in their finished products.

Kneeland, as a DVD audio authoring specialist for Warner Bros. Records, broadcasts the latest pop music onto the Internet for the whole world to hear.

Día de los Muertos celebrated at La Casa

Tall colorful candles, skeleton puppets and sugar skulls made up an altar at La Casa Latino Cultural Center to please the dead and the living. Latinos Unidos and Gamma Phi Omega sorority celebrated Día de los Muertos, also known as The Day of the Dead, Tuesday with food, fun and remembrance.

'Threepenny Opera' opens Friday

Last week, Richard Wagner's great-grandson, Gottfried Wagner, gave a lecture about the music of Kurt Weill and Berthold Brecht. This week, Bloomington residents will have the opportunity to see a live performance of one of their best-known works. Under the direction of Terence Hartnett, the Detour Theatre Company performs Weill and Brecht's 1928 work "The Threepenny Opera" at the John Waldron Arts Center this weekend.

Taking culture for granted

It took a trip to Spain to realize all the cultural things I never knew I take for granted. I was lied to. I was only mildly warned of the men of this country. A fellow Indiana Daily Student employee who studied in Salamanca over the summer (she shall remain nameless) had forewarned me. She then assured me that men in Spain are like men anywhere else. New Waldron exhibit opens to display local artists' masterpieces

The Bloomington Area Arts Council unveiled the new works on display at the John Waldron Arts Center in an opening reception Friday night. The venue showcases many of south central Indiana's best artists. This month, the BAAC displayed the works of pastel artist Lynn Gilliatt, watercolorist Connie Brorson and lamp designers Ruth Hope Conway and Linda Knudsen.

Dolls, sports, music: Pianist shares life tales

International sensation Lang Lang will be giving a recital 8 p.m. Wednesday at the IU Auditorium. The 22-year-old Chinese pianist has been hailed as the Arthur Rubinstein of today's generation. Lang Lang is the first Chinese pianist to have performed with America's top five orchestras -- Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony, collectively known as "The Big Five." Recently named as an international UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Lang Lang is the youngest on the list of influential celebrities that do their part to make a difference in the world. Here Lang Lang gives IU students a glimpse into his extraordinary life.

Exhibit showcases local artists, artwork

Art will come alive at the John Waldron Arts Center for one and all to enjoy during an exhibit featuring only local artists. At 5:30 p.m. Today, the Bloomington community will be able to view feature works of art from South Central Indiana artists in two different exhibits.

Mellencamp to play Buskirk-Chumley John Mellencamp is scheduled to perform at a live, nationally televised concert from Bloomington Nov. 11. The program, "Live By Request" on the A&E cable network, will feature Mellencamp and his band performing songs at Bloomington's Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

War paintings on display at Art Museum

Death, violence and torture are among the themes exhibited in Francisco Goya's print series, "The Disasters of War." The series, now on display at the IU Art Museum, is a chronicle of the Spanish artist's horrified reactions to the invasion of his country by Napoleonic troops during the Peninsular War of 1808-1814. Six etchings from the series will be displayed in the First Floor Gallery of Western Art throughout the fall semester.

Students hold workshop teaching how to care for performance voices

Voice and vocal health are a big concern to IU music school students, but what about theater majors? Nurturing the voice takes a conscious effort that many theater students have yet to learn. To help students keep their voices healthy, the Care of the Acting Voice workshop will be held Saturday in room A201 of the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center.
