Hockey trades create winners, losers

March 13 marked the last day NHL teams could beef up their roster before the playoffs. Surprisingly quiet were the freewheeling New York Islanders and Rangers, who decided to build around the youth already in their systems. Without further adieu, here are the winners and losers of the NHL trading season:

Every year, after two rounds of the college basketball tournament, people look for a theme. Did upsets prevail? Was there a myriad of buzzer-beaters? Is this the most exciting tournament ever?

2 team members honored as All-Americans

For the first time in five years, IU has produced two All-American wrestlers in the same season. Senior Kevin Stanley and junior Viktor Sveda were the recipients of the honor, having finished sixth and third, respectively, at the 2001 NCAA Wrestling Championship March 15-17 in Iowa City, Iowa.

With Wednesday's win against in-state foe Valparaiso, the baseball team accomplished a goal: enter the Big Ten season on a five-game winning streak.

On paper, it might look like a step down, moving from a Big Ten rising power to a tiny Division III college in Kenosha, Wisc. But for Greg Earhart, it's the opportunity he's been waiting for.

Practice features changes

Claps and cheers could be heard from the football practice fields north of Memorial Stadium Wednesday afternoon as spring football got under way. For a team that has had a losing record for four consecutive seasons, it was an optimistic bunch that ran drills for three hours.

Davis relieved to stay

Mike Davis was named IU's permanent men's basketball coach in a press conference Wednesday afternoon. But his fate was decided March 19. In a two and a half hour meeting Monday, a seven-member selection committee, led by Vice President for Administration Terry Clapacs, elected to retain Davis and remove the interim tag from his title.

IU ready for Valpo, sweeps Taylor

The baseball team won its fourth consecutive game with a doubleheader sweep of in-state foe Taylor Tuesday. IU (13-7-1) smacked 14 hits on its way to a 12-3 victory in Game 1, then jumped on the Tigers early in Game 2 to win 8-2.

Spring practice begins today

After a disappointing 3-8 season in 2000, the football team looks to begin a rebound today when it starts spring practice at 3:30 p.m.

Two teams heading in opposite directions will do battle 1 p.m. today at the IU Softball Field. Evansville (16-6) will try to keep its momentum going while IU is looking to get some going of its own.

If you ask baseball coach Bob Morgan about the Hoosiers' opponents this week, he might start talking about this weekend's series with Penn State, which kicks off the Big Ten regular season.

The women's basketball team was defeated by a big three Saturday in the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament.

3 Hoosiers named as All-Americans

Three members of the women's track and field team earned All-American honors at the NCAA indoor championships March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark. IU tied for 14th with Southern Methodist and Louisiana State in team standings, the Hoosiers' highest finish in 11 years.

Junior vaulter honored

Dino Efthimiou vaulted into the IU men's track and field record books March 8 at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Team 13th in nation

The women's swimming and diving team capped off an impressive season with its highest finish at the NCAA Championships since 1981. The Hoosiers scored 90 points to grab 13th place at the meet, which kicked off Thursday and concluded Saturday.

Rain washed away IU's hopes of winning the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational March 12, but the Hoosiers managed a second-place finish, one stroke behind Big Ten rival Michigan State.

The women's tennis team stopped a two-match losing streak Saturday with a 5-2 win at South Florida. The Hoosiers lost their previous two matches, both Big Ten battles, during spring break.

Kent State ends IU\'s tourney bid

SAN DIEGO -- Emotions ran high in IU\'s locker room after its first round game against Kent State Thursday. But they weren\'t positive emotions. IU lost 77-73 to a team almost everyone thought they would beat. Kyle Hornsby almost cried. Jeffrey Newton sat in silence. Dane Fife vented to the media.

Team looks to Big Ten for big wins

The women's tennis team has been playing a game of streaks. After opening the season with six consecutive wins, the Hoosiers find themselves on a four-match losing streak. Now it is on to the bulk of the Big Ten season for the Hoosiers (7-4, 1-0 Big Ten) to try to get back on track.
