Bringing home the bucket

Finally. At last, an IU football team won a game without having to score 40 points. Without having to gain 500-plus yards. Without trading touchdowns and hoping to score the final one. IU beat Purdue 13-7 Saturday because of defense. Finally. "It feels so great to be a defensive player on this team right now," junior safety Joe Gonzalez said. "The offense has bailed us out a lot of times. They've put a lot of points on the board. The offense shouldn't have to do that.

Woods wins again

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- One by one, the best golfers in the world stepped aside. It was Sunday at the Masters and Tiger Woods was in the lead. "After the front nine, I knew it was all over for me," U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen said. He wasn't alone. Woods won his third green jacket by proving he was far more daunting than a toughened up, redesigned Augusta National. He seized control with an early burst of birdies and watched his rivals crash in a desperate and reckless attempt to catch him. The result was another march into history, with Woods becoming only the third player to win back-to-back titles.

A Family Curse Lifted

After leading his team, The Corleones, to victory Saturday in the 52nd running of the men's Little 500 race, senior Daniel Burns credited his older brother and friends for pushing him to victory. "My brother got me started on riding," Burns said. "I rode with him in the 2000 race; he was a fifth-year and I was a sophomore. I became good friends with all his friends and they all kept pushing me on, pushing me on. I guess I can attribute my victory to him more than anyone else. They kept pushing me all the way, all the old riders kept pushing me."

Lyon named as soccer coach

Expect the women's soccer team to be goal-oriented next year. They won't be just scoring goals on the field, they'll also be meeting them off the field. At least that's what the new coach said he will demand of them. "For the team, their first goal will be to get to the Big Ten Tournament," newly-announced head coach Michael Lyon said. "That absolute must, will happen this year. Once we get in there, we're three games from the championship, so you can reassess at that point and then say 'What's the goal right here? Let's win this thing.'"

Qualifications for Little 500 Saturday

Saturday could determine the future for the potential riders of Little 500, but it's not likely. The first leg of the Little 500 begins this weekend, beginning with qualifications at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The quals, for many riders, are a chance to get on the track and start the next four weeks of preparation until race day April 19 and 20. For others, the qualification time could determine their performance come race day.

Making the transition: Prep coaches join IU's staff

Middle school physical education teacher in the mornings and afternoons. College football coach in the late afternoons and early evenings. That was how Ted Huber spent his long work days in the early 1980s when he served as Lee Corso's defensive ends coach at IU. In 1980, Huber left his job as Bloomington South football coach to join Corso's staff. "I had a secret desire to become a college coach," said Huber, who now coaches centers and guards at Ball State. It's easy to forget Huber once coached at IU. Hundreds of players, dozens of assistants and three head coaches have come and gone since the time Huber and Corso left Bloomington.

Coach to meet former team

Tonight's match for the women's volleyball team will present an unfamiliar challenge for the players, but a familiar opponent for head coach Katie Weismiller. Indiana meets St. Louis tonight at the Bauman-Eberhardt Center on the St. Louis campus. This is the first meeting in six years between the two teams, but Weismiller's ties to the Billikens makes this matchup interesting. Weismiller, a native of St. Louis, began her career at SLU as head coach from 1989-1991. SLU won more than 75 percent of their matches under Weismiller, posting a 50-24 record. Weismiller also made an appearance at the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship in 1989.

Coaches bring new style to IU

Patrolling the 50-yard line at Memorial Stadium Saturday, coach Gerry DiNardo eyed his football team as it participated in pre-practice stretches. Piercing through the 40-degree wind blowing toward the north end of the stadium was the scratchy, Boston accent of defensive line coach Joe Cullen.

Coach hurt in wreck

Women's basketball coach Kathi Bennett remained in stable condition at Bloomington Hospital Sunday night after breaking the second vertebra in her neck in a two-car accident Friday morning in Bloomington.

Heading to lay-offs on a good note

The IU men's track and field team was victorious this weekend. The Hoosiers defeated Big Ten foes Ohio State and Penn State at home Saturday. IU is 3-0 heading into a two-week lay-off. The meet had good performances including three more NCAA provisional marks.

Benson's campaign comes to an end

For former IU basketball star Kent Benson, swishing a jump shot was far easier than being away from his family. Benson put an end to his pursuit of Indiana's Secretary of State office last week, saying he wants to spend more time with his family.

Homecourt advantage?

Coach Mike Davis is happy he had to endure just a 45-minute bus ride for the Big Ten Tournament. Senior Dane Fife and Tom Coverdale hope for high Hoosier fan turnout, and Jared Jeffries' family won't have to fly, something the sophomore fears. For IU, there are plenty of positives regarding the Big Ten Tournament moving to Indianapolis for the first time in its five-year history.

Mouse pads and Heismans

On the road to the Heisman Trophy, Oregon's Joey Harrington has a $250,000 10-story high billboard in Times Square. Antwaan Randle El has mouse pads. Hey, they're neat mouse pads. Colorful and bright, they boast IU's quarterback-turned-receiver as a "Heisman Trophy Frontrunner." So does the 2001 IU football media guide, front and center. In fact, Randle El's figure, some red flowers and the Sample Gates cover the cover. Six other Hoosiers got to share the back cover.

Hoosiers put win in the past

Antwaan Randle El plays a lot of roles on the football team. He's the quarterback, the team's second-leading rusher, the punt returner and sometimes a punter. Right up there with his football duties are his off-the-field tasks. One of those is being a captain, which requires keeping his teammates level-headed.

Do the seats proud

Ever wonder what the 20,000 seats in Memorial Stadium that aren't filled do on Saturdays? The players know how bad it sucks to have a crowd that could be out-numbered by a state-wide meeting of the Athletes Foot Association. But what about those poor seats? It's the same seats week after week that aren't used -- you know, those seats in all four corners of Memorial Stadium. They're there to be sat on, sometimes stood on and occasionally slept on, no doubt in another IU defeat. Instead, they're usually limited to shining in the sun or collecting raindrops and empty cups. Poor, lonely seats.

6 athletes qualify for NCAA meet

Coach Randy Heisler did not have high expectations for his athletes going into this weekend's 15-team meet at Arizona State because of his team's recent intense training. Instead, he got a surprise from the three-day Baldy Castillo Invitational. The Hoosiers won six events and provisionally qualified six athletes for the NCAA Championships in six events.

Hoosiers have flawless weekend

Having just completed a road trip, the women's tennis team wanted to make a statement at the IU Tennis Center Saturday. Mission accomplished. The Hoosiers (10-6, 1-2 Big Ten) ripped through two opponents, defeating Illinois-Chicago in the morning and Butler in the afternoon, both by a flawless 7-0 score.

Divers head south for championship
