Team gears up for run at Nationals

Since the beginning of the season, there has been talk about the IU women's cross country team making it to nationals. Junior Audrey Giesler points out that if the Hoosiers are going to go to nationals they need freshmen Jessica Gall and Lindsay Hattendorf to step up in order to accomplish their goal. "Our team is expecting to qualify for Nationals this weekend, and we won't be able to do it without them (Hattendorf and Gall)." Giesler said. "They have been an integral part of our success this season, and I'm sure they're both planning on finishing what we set out to do as a team at the beginning of the season."

Irish dominate in hometown classic

After the first day of the 15th annual Eck Classic, held at the Eck Pavilion in South Bend, the Hoosiers stood 6-6 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. But, things seemed to get worse the remaining day of the tournament for the team.

Hoosiers hoping for 'second season'

On a roll with three straight Big Ten wins, an 18-8 overall record, and its best conference start since 1995, the Hoosier volleyball team seems quite poised for an at-large spot in the NCAA Tournament. With just two more wins this season, IU will tie the school record for wins since the inception of NCAA sponsored women's volleyball. Along with its impressive record, the Hoosiers have defeated numerous ranked opponents, including last weekend's back-to-back victories against No. 27 Michigan and No. 26 Michigan State. Along with their successful 2002 season, the Hoosiers remain true to their "One point at a time" motto and the reality that the work is not over yet.

Clapacs fills in as McNeely resigns

Veteran IU administrator Terry Clapacs was named interim athletic director Friday, as Michael McNeely resigned from the position 16 months after taking the job.

McNeely resigns

Michael McNeely's 16-month stint as IU athletic director is officially over. President Myles Brand accepted McNeely's resignation today after speculation swirled yesterday that he would be fired. McNeely left Assembly Hall after a meeting with Brand Wednesday and was not at work Thursday. Friday, he resigned.

Michael McNeely, the man who orchestrated a complete overhaul of the IU sports brand, is leaving the University after just 16 months on the job, sources in the athletic department said Thursday evening. Official sources within the University would not comment on McNeely's status with IU.

IU looking for upset at tourney

In what could be its last game of the season the field hockey team heads to Columbus, Ohio this weekend for the Big Ten tournament. The Hoosiers will take on the Michigan State today at 10 a.m. If the 7th seeded Hoosiers don't pull off an upset, their season is over. IU is coming off of a 1-1 weekend where they fell to Northwestern, then turned around the next day to defeat Colgate, 1-0.

Women looking to improve on No. 13 ranking, 10th place finish

The women's swim team is continuing the wave of success that carried them to 10th place in the NCAA last year by winning the first three meets of their season. On Saturday, the women's swimming and diving team will be looking to notch another victory as they host Northwestern in a dual meet at 1 p.m. at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Complex.

Hoosiers compete against 'Cats

Pivotal weekend nears for volleyball team

A lake of Michigans will pour into the University Gym this weekend for the match against the Hoosier volleyball team. IU faces the 25th ranked Michigan State Spartans Friday and the Michigan Wolverines Saturday. Standing at 6-6 in the Big Ten, this weekend is a pivotal point for the Hoosiers' conference season.

Team looks for intensity to end losing skid

The IU hockey team will try to end a three-game skid this weekend in Chicago, Ill. The Hoosiers (2-3-0) will play two games against No. 19 Robert Morris College (8-5-0) in their second division I series of the year.

IU could not find redemption Thursday afternoon in East Lansing in the first round of the tournament. Purdue beat IU 1-0 for the second time this season in the fifth minute of overtime to advance to the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Seniors honored as finalists

IU's soccer team was well represented Wednesday when the Missouri Athletic Club announced the finalists for college soccer's player of the year. Seniors Pat Noonan and Ryan Mack were named as two of the 15 finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy. Mack and Noonan are the only pair of teammates on the finalists list. Hoosier coach Jerry Yeagley said his senior duo is worthy of the praise which comes along with being named finalists.

Team not underestimating competition at exhibition

Despite its being an exhibition game, the IU women's basketball team is not underestimating the importance of such a game. The Hoosiers take on Premier Sports in their first of two exhibition games this season at 5 p.m. tonight in Assembly Hall.

Last year's exhibition game against IU didn't go so well for Athletes in Action. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 19-0 lead to start the game, and didn't look back, posting a 105-59 shellacking over AIA.

Michigan State, IU to compete for spitoon

NCAA rules prohibit any game from ending in a tie. Therefore, Saturday's game between Michigan State (3-6, 1-4 Big Ten), losers of four straight, and IU (3-6, 1-4 Big Ten), losers of three straight, must produce a winner. For the Spartans, the game will come on the heels of a week that could be considered one of the lowest points in the history of the program.
