Team gains national ranking

Men's cross country coach Robert Chapman wants to know how many top teams there are at IU. "How many top-15 programs do we have this school?," the coach asked. In any event, his team became one yesterday as the new poll released by the NCAA ranked the Hoosier men as No. 15 in the nation. "I'm really proud of these guys," Chapman said. "They've done an amazing job, and everybody has played an integral part.

Hoosiers disappointed with seed for tournament

Where's the BCS when you need it? The IU men's soccer team has spent the majority of the season ranked in the top five in the nation. The Hoosiers' reputation precedes them having advanced to the College Cup 15 times in the team's 29-year existence. But some players said these records meant little to the NCAA selection committee. "We may have gotten the shaft a little bit," senior Ryan Mack said. "I think it's good for us to get a shot in the face, so we realize where we are right now, and what we need to do to get ready."

Calm, quiet linebacker learning to lead on field

His football coach calls him the quiet type. So do some of his teammates. He even considers himself a goofy guy. But when sophomore linebacker Herana-Daze Jones steps on the field, he is all business. Jones is second on the team with 66 solo tackles and 32 assists for a total of 98 despite missing last Saturday's game against Penn State with a shoulder injury. He is averaged 9.8 tackles per game which is good enough for fourth in the Big Ten conference for all games played.

'Hoosiers' comparing the movie with the real story

Whenever a movie is based on a true story, it begs the question how much of it is fact and how much is fiction. So how much of "Hoosiers" really did stay true to the story that the movie was based on? "The only thing that was exactly the same was the last second shot," said Ray Craft, who was a starting guard on the "real" team, the 1954 Milan Indians. "They tried to authenticate it as much as they could. I guess we didn't have as much controversy, though."

Faulk on sidelines for Monday night

ST. LOUIS -- Marshall Faulk was scratched from the St. Louis Rams' game against the Chicago Bears on Monday night. Faulk left last week's victory over the Chargers with a strained tendon in his left foot and a sprained right ankle, and did not practice last week. Coach Mike Martz said Saturday night that Faulk would run a bit before the game, but he did not dress.

Hoosiers hold out for Big Ten tourney

The men's tennis team was eliminated from the Big Ten Singles Championships on the second of three days of the tournament. Only two Hoosiers made it to the final 16. Sophomore Jakub Praibis suffered a tough loss to Ohio State's senior Vincent Ng, losing 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Ryan Recht played a intense match against freshman Andrew Wakefield from Penn State. Recht lost in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Postseason tourney bid in Hoosiers' grasp

Dropping two matches against conference rivals Ohio State and the 13th ranked Penn State in a single week, the IU volleyball team has fallen to seventh in the conference with an 8-8 record. The stumbles have caused IU to lose some of its thrust in trying to secure a 2002 NCAA Tournament bid.

Team opens league season with losses

The IU ice hockey team started the Great Midwest Hockey League season with a pair of road losses against the University of Michigan and Oakland University. The Hoosiers struck at the end of the first period on Friday against Michigan when freshman forward Pete Johnson scored his fourth of the year on a pass from sophomore defenseman Todd Lorenger. Michigan responded immediately, less than two minutes into the period. Junior forward Matt Howard again put the Hoosiers ahead in the second, but Michigan answered shortly after with a powerplay goal and added another powerplay goal to go up 3-2 in the third.

Johnson runs wild on Hoosiers

Penn State senior running back Larry Johnson needed 158 yards Saturday to break the school's single season rushing record. Johnson cruised to 194 yards in the first half alone on his way to setting several records on the day in a 58-25 win over the Hoosiers. The IU defense had no answer for Johnson. He finished the day with 28 carries for 327 yards and four touchdowns. IU only had 275 yards of total offense. The defense has now given up 200 points in their last four games.

IU swept away by Nittany Lions

It was no David versus Goliath ending at University Gym Saturday Night, as mighty Penn State showed why they are ranked No. 13, by beating the Hoosiers in three straight sets, 30-25, 30-25 and 30-25. IU (18-10, 8-8) looked like the favorite team early as the Hoosiers came out roaring in game one by grabbing a quick 7-2 lead. Penn State, (21-6, 11-5) narrowed the gap, however, and eventually took their first lead of the game at 13-12. Fortunately for the Nittany Lions, it was the last time they would have to grab the lead, as they held on for a 30-25 victory in game one.

Sophomore, jnior pace Hoosiers

After a weekend off, the women's cross-country team traveled back to West Lafayette for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet after taking third on the same course two weeks ago at the Big Ten Championships. The team finished in fourth place with two runners in the top 15. Sophomore Mindy Peterson led the team with a 10th place finish on the 6k course and a time of 21:42.2. Following closely behind Peterson was junior Audrey Giesler who finished 14th with a time of 21:46.8.

Penn State returns favor for regular season loss

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Every time IU travels to Happy Valley to take on Penn State, it is guaranteed to be a grudge match that goes down to the wire. Although Penn State needed penalty kicks to get revenge for a 1-0 double overtime loss during the regular season, the Nittany Lions arguably won Friday's 2-1 game in the second half. Not only were they inches from scoring the game-winning goal with about 30 seconds left in the game when a foot foul on the throw-in negated the goal, but Penn State (13-7-0) entered the second half with a renewed vigor that IU (14-2-3) could not combat.

Runners ensure Nationals berth with solid race at Regionals

WEST LAFAYETTE -- Saturday, the No. 20 men's cross country team battled frigid weather and fierce competition at Purdue for the Great Lakes District meet. The team overcame both to finish fourth in the team battle, only one point behind third place and No. 10 Central Michigan. Seven ranked teams competed in the meet. The top two teams in the race qualify automatically for the NCAA Championships Nov. 25 at Terre Haute, but at-large bids also earn a spot at the race. The entire field for the meet will be announced later today.

Team impresses against constellations of Stars

When a well-devised movie script goes according to plan, an Oscar-caliber film is usually the result. The same applies to basketball. The women's basketball team did not stray from the script Friday night when they defeated the Reebok Lady All-Stars 93-50 in Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers tallied five players in double-figures, while IU freshman guard Cyndi Valentin led all scorers with 16 points. Every Hoosier player scored except freshman Kali Kullberg, who added seven assists.

Hoosiers rout Team Nike

Before Mike Davis begins a post-game press conference, he always speaks a trademark phrase into the microphone. "I thank God for this opportunity," is what he usually says. But Saturday night, after IU beat Team Nike 74-49 in their last exhibition game, Davis stepped to the podium in Assembly Hall and began the press conference a bit differently. "Well I thank God that game is over," he said. "What can I say? (It was an) exhibition game."

Looking back on 'Hoosiers'

Only a handful of sports movies in the history of American cinema leave audiences with the feeling they have viewed not a great sports movie, but instead a great movie that happens to be about sports. That's what the 1986 Orion Pictures film "Hoosiers" does. "It was a great movie because not all sports movies translate to the mainstream," said Andy Katz, senior college basketball writer for ESPN.com.

Seniors left out in the cold in final performance

For nearly one half, IU (3-8, 1-6 Big Ten) fought like a dog that was tired of being beaten and battered and finally snapped back against No. 16 Penn State (8-3, 4-3 Big Ten), a team they have never defeated. And then Larry Johnson came to play. The Nittany Lions senior running back shredded the IU defense and the record books Saturday with 327 yards rushing on 28 carries and led Penn State to a 58-25 win in the final game of the season at Memorial Stadium.

Penn State upends IU in Big Ten semifinals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Heading into the Big Ten Championships, the IU men's soccer team had played 236 games on the road at a total of 73 different facilities. The Hoosiers owned a winning record at all of those road facilities they had played more than four games at except for Penn State's Jeffrey Field, the host for the Big Ten Championships. Friday, Penn State showed why as they downed IU 4-2 on penalty kicks after tying 1-1 in regulation and two overtime periods.

Big Ten singles tourney closes out fall tennis season

The men's tennis team wraps up its fall season this weekend with the Big Ten Singles Championships. The Championships will be held at The University of Minnesota from Nov. 16-18. This is the team's last tournament until they host Murray State on Jan. 16 to kick off its Spring season.
