Gamboa attacker gets probation

\nCHICAGO -- A 15-year-old boy who attacked a Kansas City Royals coach during a baseball game at Comiskey Park was sentenced Thursday to five years of probation.\nCook County Judge Paul Stralka also ordered the teen to undergo mandatory counseling and perform 30 hours of community service.\n"Your potential far outweighs the wrong you have done," Stralka told the teen in court Thursday.\nThe boy was arrested along with his father, William Ligue Jr., after the Sept. 19 attack on Royals coach Tom Gamboa which was televised live. The boy's father has pleaded innocent to charges of aggravated battery and mob action.\n"You did not have a protective and caring father," Stralka told the teen. But the judge also reminded the boy of his responsibility for the attack, saying his actions "were not a mistake but intentionally committed."

Konerko agrees to 3-year deal

\nCHICAGO -- First baseman Paul Konerko, who had his first 100-RBI season and made the AL All-Star team for the first time, agreed to a three-year contract Thursday with the Chicago White Sox.\nKonerko, 26, batted a career-high .304 with 27 home runs and 104 RBIs in 151 games last season. He finished second on the team in hits (173), doubles (30), slugging percentage (.498), total bases (284), average and RBIs, and was third in home runs and runs scored (81).\n"He has been extremely consistent over the past four seasons, and is a major influence and leader in our clubhouse," assistant general manager Rick Hahn said.\nKonerko has been a .291 hitter with 104 home runs and 381 RBIs in 592 games with the White Sox after being acquired from Cincinnati for Mike Cameron in November 1998.

Hewitt to finish season No. 1

\nSHANGHAI, China -- Andre Agassi's second loss in the season-ending Masters Cup on Thursday means Lleyton Hewitt will finish the year with the world No. 1 ranking.\nAgassi double-faulted on match point, handing Juan Carlos Ferrero a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (6) victory. Shortly after the match, Agassi withdrew from the tournament with a hip injury. Thomas Johansson of Sweden will replace Agassi.\nAgassi came into the eight-player tournament with a chance to overtake Hewitt in the rankings and finish the year No. 1. But he failed to reach the semifinals after his second straight loss.\nHewitt then celebrated his top ranking by handing Marat Safin his third straight loss, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
