Maddux wins 15th for 17th straight year PITTSBURGH -- Greg Maddux reached 15 wins for a record 17th consecutive season. Getting to 200 innings made him just as happy, "You always have your goals," Maddux said Thursday after leading the Chicago Cubs over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3. "One of them is always to win 20, but you always have a goal to pitch 200 innings. If you can go out there and get your 200 innings, you have to be doing something right."

Loss to Purdue brings streak to 4

Experienced quarterbacks are proving their worth in the Big Ten. Just look at the stats. The top four passing offenses (Purdue, Northwestern, Penn State and Illinois) are all led by veteran quarterbacks. Five of the top seven quarterbacks in pass efficiency are holdovers. "If you're going to have only one experienced player back on your squad, you'd want him back at quarterback," said Purdue coach Joe Tiller, who has the luxury of having the best returning quarterback in the conference, Kyle Orton.

Colts' James held out of practice but upgraded to questionable for Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James was upgraded from doubtful to questionable for this week's game against Green Bay despite missing Wednesday's practice. Coach Tony Dungy said James worked out earlier in the day but was held out of the afternoon practice. Dungy said Thursday's practice could help clear up James' playing status.

Growing up in Chesterfield, Mo., strong safety Will Meyers was a First-Team All-Conference Athlete as a defensive and running back, an All-Area/All-Purpose Player and Parkway West High School's MVP for his senior season. His football accomplishments earned him much attention throughout the state; in fact, he was chosen to the All-State football squad as both defensive back and running back. And his talents did not stop there.

Boilers spike Hoosiers to open conference play

The IU volleyball team wasn't able to rebound Wednesday evening from its three-match losing streak in West Lafayette. The Hoosiers fell to Purdue University in straight sets (30-22, 30-20, 30-12). The defeat dropped the team to 6-6 on the year and 0-1 in conference play, with what could prove to be a very difficult Big Ten schedule coming up.

Defense get big lift from transfer

Junior linebacker Paul Szczesny had a choice. When it came time to choose a school to continue his football career he had options: He could have been a Trojan, a Sooner, a Bruin or a Badger. Instead he decided to become a Hoosier, and the coaching staff and he couldn't be happier with the decision, he said. Szczesny (pronounced Skez-nee) thought about staying out West, but his Niles, Ill., roots brought him back to the Midwest as he began to consider schools in the heartland of America.

Fundamentals key to defense

Though the Hoosier football defense has been opportunistic, forcing 10 turnovers, teams have been getting up and down the field averaging 481.3 yards per game, ranking the defense at No. 108 in the country. The past two games have been rough for the Hoosier defense, as they gave up 495 yards to the University of Oregon and season-high 560 yards in a 51-32 to the University of Kentucky.

Yankees take care of Blue Jays for Loaiza's 100th win

NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi homered to end the longest slump of his career, and Esteban Loaiza finally earned his 100th career victory and first for the Yankees, leading New York over the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 Tuesday night. Gary Sheffield hit his 36th home run two days after getting a pair of cortisone shots. Alex Rodriguez almost homered for the Yankees, too, but was robbed on a spectacular catch by center fielder Vernon Wells.

For the past two years, billiards has been conspicuously missing from the long list of intramural sports offered by the IU RecSports program, but this fall marks its return. The program initially left campus due to lack of participation, but because students missed the program, it is back by popular demand.

Daily grind leaves senior's plate full

After hammering the snooze button with a full fist, the typical IU student tries desperately just to get those ever-so-important five extra minutes of sleep. Getting on and successfully riding the bus is even more of a challenge, filled with constant head-nods and dozing-off. And the further into the semester, that morning shower becomes scarier and the Starbucks cups or a want for a direct IV line of coffee becomes more prevalent. And we haven't even talked about class and the struggle to pencil in a nap somewhere.

IU hopes to bounce back against Boilers

The brooms were out this past weekend at the T.I.S. Bookstore Invitational, held at IU's University Gym. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, the visiting teams were the ones cleaning up, sweeping IU three matches to none. Despite losses to Kent State University, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Alabama, there were bright spots and even an IU milestone that has the team confident and ready to move on. In the loss to Kent State, senior Christina Archibald's 26 kills helped her set a new all-time kills record at IU. Archibald has now recorded 1,547 kills, breaking the previous record set by Melissa Brewer in 2003.

Cubs, Marlins split crucial doubleheader

MIAMI -- The Chicago Cubs' 24-hour visit to Miami included a brief stay atop the NL wild-card race. Then they lost their lead because they couldn't beat David Weathers. The journeyman right-hander, making his first start in six years, limited Chicago to two hits and one run in five innings, and the Florida Marlins won 5-2 for a split of their doubleheader Monday.

Injury bug strikes with vengeance in Week 2

The rookie season of Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. might have ended after just two games. The first-round draft pick is among several players who will be sidelined for a few weeks, or more, as a result of injuries in Sunday's games. Others include New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister and Baltimore Ravens tight end Todd Heap, both of whom were knocked out of games with a sprained ankle.

Dennison, Giesler awarded prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships

A fundamental goal for the IU athletics department is to have all student athletes earn a degree from IU while being competitive in sports. Recent IU graduates Audrey Giesler and Karen Dennison were recognized for meeting and exceeding this goal.

Around The Game

The Oct. 2 IU-Michigan football game at Memorial Stadium has been set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. on ABC. The game will be shown regionally. Saturday, IU plays Michigan State at home in a game which will be broadcast on ESPN Plus Local but will not be shown live. It will be shown in tape delay starting at 8 p.m. on WTTV Channel 4. The game will be shown live on ESPN GamePlan.

Hoosier headman receives acclaim

For the seventh straight year, the IU men's and women's diving coach Jeff Huber has received the U.S. Diving's National Coach of the Year award. "Winning this award never gets old," Huber said in a statement.
