Racial profiling applies to New York art

It's not enough to just storm red-faced from the gallery. What Mayor Rudolph Giuliani doesn't like gets a righteous whack with his mayor-club. That's why he told reporters that Renee Cox's "Yo' Mama's Last Supper," a reinterpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" that depicts Jesus as a nude, black female, is "disgusting," "outrageous" and "anti-Catholic." He wants to cut the Brooklyn Museum's funding. He wants to create a task force.

A return to the 'golden' age

The Golden Girls were famous for clip shows. You remember: Blanche, Dorothy, Rose and Sophia would sit around a cheesecake, sifting through memories. Their editors would splice in scenes from old episodes, and their writers would revel in the luxury of not having to come up with any new ideas. I feel like I'm watching a White House clip show. It's called "The Worst Political Moments of the Last 20 Years."

Mayor's initiatives beneficial to city

Stemming from Mayor John Fernandez's State of the City address Thursday, five major initiatives for the future of Bloomington were introduced amid much protest. The main themes include the education and welfare-oriented Children First program; the Safe and Civil City program to make Bloomington a more secure community; a Rebuilding Bloomington program to improve quality of neighborhoods and investment downtown; the government efficiency program, Innovation and Fiscal Responsibility; and Leading in our Changing Economy, a program geared to bring high-tech companies to Bloomington.

U.S. planes attack Iraqi radar sites

WASHINGTON -- President Bush ordered an airstrike Friday on Iraqi military sites south of Baghdad to destroy five military command sites that threatened American and British aircraft. White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said the action was "a routine strike" to enforce the no-fly zone in Iraq and protect U.S. personnel. Bush authorized the strike Thursday morning. British and U.S. planes took part in the attack.

Sitting pretty after day one

The first race of the finals in the 2001 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships might serve as an omen for the Hoosiers. Or at least they hope. The Hoosiers won two events, putting them behind only Michigan after day one of the three-day event at Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. Penn State sits third.

Theta Chi nationals expected to rule today on whether to revoke charter

The ruling body of Theta Chi Fraternity was considering the future of IU's Alpha Iota chapter late into Thursday night. The Theta Chi Grand Chapter -- composed of Theta Chi alumni across the country -- discussed during a conference call whether to revoke the fraternity's charter.

Nationals revoke Theta Chi charter

Theta Chi's national organization revoked the IU chapter's charter Friday because of a Jan. 27 party at the house. Alcohol was served at the party, a violation of the chapter's probation, said David Westol, executive director of Theta Chi fraternity. The party is also at the center of the IU Police Department's investigation into freshman Seth Korona's death.

In memory of Paul Nutter: student, friend, fighter

When I spoke to my friend Paul for the last time in October, I knew things weren't good. I had hoped to visit him, and he told me, "Maybe in a few weeks, when I feel better." He never felt better. Hoosiers hope long shot turns into tourney bid

Student earns All-USA spot

Roessler is part of the team selected from 682 nominees nationwide for his intellectual achievement and leadership. Napster ruling affects campus

Students and staff had mixed reactions Monday to a San Francisco appeals court ruling that U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel must edit her original injunction against Napster Inc. The revision must state it only prevents the unauthorized trade of copyrighted music by users. The appeals court also ruled the company must delete from its Web site all links allowing users to exchange copyrighted material in the form of MP3 files.

Team heads east in second weekend

Normally, junior Brooke Monroe and sophomore Stormy Hanson are just your run-of-the-mill energetic athletes. But this week the two have hardly been able to contain their excitement. After weeks of anxiously awaiting the start of the women's softball season, the Hoosiers' scheduled season opener Saturday at Evansville was canceled because of soggy field conditions. The cancellation of the game has made the co-captains that much more ecstatic about starting the season, which they will finally be able to do today against Virginia at the Triangle Classic at North Carolina State.

Team anxious for outdoor action, start of season
