The Epic: Taking frat rock beyond cargo pants

·

Frat Rock? The concept seemed laughable at first, almost oxymoronic. A mental image is conjured of guys in cargo pants trying to perfect Dave Matthew's songs so the girls would dig them at the next formal. The Epic is Bloomington's newest, up and coming frat rock band, stemming out of the greek subculture here on campus. With six members in the band, they represent four of the campus' fraternities, and are enjoying a large fanbase within the greek community. Although the band credits much of their success to their involvement in fraternities, they are looking to broaden their horizons and their audience.

Brehm seeks partnerships

·

Thirty-three days into her tenure as chancellor has left Sharon Brehm a bit frazzled. She faces page after page of reading, of signing, of names and titles and phone numbers to remember. She attends countless meetings and luncheons and University activities. She's even managed to swing by the MAC for an opera theatre performance. Brehm might be frazzled, but she hasn't lost her focus.

Big game, bigger victory

·

Jeff Newton's teammates call him weird. They say he's playing like a man. They say they can't say enough about how well he's playing. His coach remembers when he couldn't make contact with the rim on a free throw. Judging by his wacky career, they're all right on.

Cheers to Scotty's

One of the newest restaurants to descend upon the Bloomington dining scene is Scotty's Brewhouse, a "Chicago-esque, Brick-style" new-age version of Cheers. The upbeat atmosphere of the restaurant is an invitation to people of all ages to meet up with friends or catch a game on one of the big screen TVs.

Bloomington native a classical prodigy

·

It is always exciting to see a talented young musician grow into a major player on the tough classical music scene. Even more of a thrill is to know that you were there in the beginning and helped his or her career move from the practice rooms of a university into the world's most famous concert halls.

Alpha Gamma Delta freshman rookie Corey Bitzer was third, followed by Johnson's teammate, senior Sara Coffman, Delta Zeta senior Lisa Braudis and Delta Gamma senior Lauren Naset rounded out the top five.

Hoosiers silence critics with win

·

If you listen to the critics, IU got hit by a meteorite. ESPN's Curry Kirkpatrick can eat his words: IU did beat Britney Spears and N'Sync and sophomore guard AJ Moye was right. Duke isn't the University of Jesus Christ. And 12 disciples weren't playing when IU beat the No.1 seed in the NCAA South region, Duke, 74-73. Last year's NCAA champs.

GOP balks at tax plan

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Majority House Democrats got enough Republican support to make changes in their sweeping tax-and-budget package Tuesday, but they lacked enough votes even from their own party to pass the overall plan and send it to the Senate.

ADLER, Russia -- A Russian airliner carrying at least 76 people from Israel exploded and plunged into the Black Sea Thursday, raising fears of a terrorist attack. U.S. officials said a missile fired during Ukrainian military exercises apparently downed the plane by accident.

Hoosiers to face Iowa, Notre Dame at home

·

In athletics, some say the way to become the best is to play the best. The IU men's tennis team will get that chance Saturday against in-state perennial power Notre Dame. After losing their last three matches, and five of the past six, the Hoosiers have the daunting task of facing the No. 7 Fighting Irish in addition to conference foe Iowa.

Who's kicking who?

·

Anyone else confused? IU has played five games, and in each one, the Hoosiers have missed either a field goal or an extra point. Field goals -- ones from further than 35 yards -- are understandable. But what IU is doing isn't. The Hoosiers have two kickers -- sophomore Adam Braucher and freshman Bryan Robertson -- who have combined to miss five extra points in 17 attempts. IU opponents have missed only one of their 18 point-after attempts. IU's field goal efforts -- again from Braucher and Roberston -- have failed on four of five tries. Makes you wonder if these two are kicking with the correct feet. The good news is Braucher and Robertson are young, so they have time to improve. The bad news is if they don't improve, it could be a long, bumpy road for the duo ... and IU might be better off betting on the two-point conversion.

Monroe Lake at record level

·

Monroe Lake reached record levels Tuesday as runoff from the week's heavy rains caused the already-swollen lake to rise even higher. For the first time in the dam's 37-year history, water levels rose high enough to reach the emergency spillway, designed to handle overflow from the dam.

Bench play propels Hoosiers past Sooners

·

ATLANTA -- As the Hoosiers continue to move through the NCAA tournament, two things stay the same. The doubters tell them why they can't win and IU proves them wrong.

Welfare reform sanctions too harsh

·

When Republicans swept the 1994 elections, gaining majorities in both houses of Congress, they set their sights on several policy areas, not the least of which was reforming welfare. With the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, signed into law by President William Clinton on August 22, 1996, they succeeded in ending the nation's 61-year-old federal guarantee of cash assistance.
