Colts looking for better showing against Bills

INDIANAPOLIS -- After a pair of disappointing performances the last two weeks, the Indianapolis Colts are hoping for a better showing when the Buffalo Bills come to the RCA Dome Saturday night. Indianapolis is 1-1 in the preseason. The Colts had a come-from-behind 21-17 win over San Diego on the road two weeks ago and dropped a 31-7 decision to the New York Jets Saturday.

So I was watching the gymnastics "Champion's Gala" last night trying to figure out what that throbbing in my temple was. After no less than two hours of Arabian dismounts, double layouts and Korean guys complaining about scoring, I realized what was going on. My brain was screaming at me.

Prosecutors fear DNA evidence contaminated in Kobe Bryant trial

DENVER -- Two days before the start of jury selection in Kobe Bryant's rape case, prosecutors charged that crucial DNA evidence the defense had hoped to use to prove the NBA star's innocence might have been contaminated. The judge in the case granted prosecutors' request for a hearing Thursday to question the reliability of the defense's DNA experts. The witnesses are expected to argue that the DNA evidence shows the accuser was promiscuous.

Cubs 4, Brewers 2 CHICAGO -- Corey Patterson delivered after a disputed call went the Cubs' way, and Chicago sent the Milwaukee Brewers out of Wrigley Field with their eighth straight loss. Patterson hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning Wednesday in a 4-2 victory, capping a rally that began on a controversial leadoff double by Mark Grudzielanek.

Hoosiers announce schedule for upcoming 2004-05 season

The IU men's basketball 2004-05 schedule was released Wednesday, highlighted by a non-conference schedule including a Dec. 1 home game vs. North Carolina in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and a Dec. 4 visit to Storrs, Conn., to take on the defending national champion Connecticut Huskies. Following the UConn game, IU continues with rivals Notre Dame in Bloomington and then travels south to take on Kentucky in the 48th edition of the Border War in Louisville's Freedom Hall.

Decision approaches in search for new media director

The search for a new director of media relations has been underway for some time, but it is now reaching its final stages. Bill Stephan, vice president for University Relations and Corporate Partnerships, has whittled down the applicants from the original 40 to a handful.

Residence halls see decrease in freshmen

As a result of the recent downturn in the freshmen student population, residence halls will be packed this year -- with empty space and unanswered questions. Residential Programs and Services is estimating between 9,350 and 9,400 students in IU's 11 dorms this semester, down from 9,785 last fall, said RPS Planning Director Buck Walters. He said exact figures won't be available until Sept. 10, as no-shows and transfers will need to be taken into account.

Ashton dorm to house Kappa Sigma

Kappa Sigma alumni and current brothers watched as their house was demolished before their eyes. The August ceremony marked the start of a new beginning for the Kappa Sigma fraternity as their house at 1411 N. Jordan Ave. was torn down in preparation for the construction of a new house. In the meantime, the brothers will be living temporarily in Weatherly Hall in Ashton Center for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Feds acknowledge wrongly accusing Evansville man EVANSVILLE -- Federal authorities have acknowledged they wrongly arrested an Evansville businessman in a large drug bust last month. The Drug Enforcement Administration said Tuesday that one of the 37 people charged with participating in a drug ring that distributed $30 million worth of cocaine, heroin and marijuana in southern Indiana was falsely using the name of Charles Hall, 42.

Indiana governor's race heats up

While the summer frequently provides a lull and a vacation for many, the race for Indiana's governor's mansion has continued at high speed and is becoming one of the most closely watched races in the 2004 election. Gov. Joe Kernan, 58, is the Democratic nominee who took over the office after Gov. Frank O'Bannon died of a stroke in September 2003. Kernan, a former three-term mayor of South Bend and lieutenant governor under O'Bannon, is seeking a full term of his own.
