IU Bookstore allows year-round billing

Beginning this semester, students can charge books to their University accounts year-round. If a student needs a Psychology book in September, bursar billing is the way to go. Neurology in November? Bursar billing. French in February? Bursar billing. Accounting academia in April? Bursar billing.

Science building construction hampers students, professors

Freshmen might no longer be the only students who find it difficult to get around campus this semester. Due to construction on Simon Hall, an 80,000 square-foot science building that will house interdisciplinary science research and various labs, many students are having to take various detours throughout campus. A safety fence circles the entire construction site between Myers Hall and the Chemistry Building, which makes it hard for students to cut through campus.

Purpose of police blotter questioned

I would like the Indiana Daily Student, Bloomington Herald-Times and every other mediocre newspaper in the nation to present a strong argument which demonstrates the newsworthiness of reporting the police blotter. For those who do not know what the police blotter is, I will try to simplify its context. The blotter is a section of the paper which reports preliminary charges against an individual brought by an arresting police officer.

The third anniversary

The third anniversary is a mystery. In 2001, I was sitting in my high school U.S. government and politics class when, at 9 a.m., our principal asked every classroom to turn on their TVs. The weeks following were unforeseeable and unscripted, yet somehow Americans knew what to do. We tuned into the news, said hello to strangers and hoisted American flags. In 2002, the distance between my family and I was difficult enough for my first couple weeks as a freshman.

Lance Armstrong is a god. There's no getting around it. What he has accomplished in the cycling world alone ranks him atop the list of greatest cyclists ever, and among the greatest athletes ever. But what he has done off the bike makes him even more remarkable. He's a cancer survivor. For all of you who didn't know, Lance rides his bike with one testicle. In 1996, as an up-and-coming cyclist with a hot temper, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Clinton has successful heart by-pass surgery

Bill Clinton had a successful quadruple heart bypass operation Monday to relieve severely clogged arteries that doctors said had put the former president in grave danger of a major heart attack in the near future.

Crimson or Blue?

We at the Indiana Daily Student love being a part of IU. We love being Hoosiers, even if we don't know what they are. We love bleeding cream and crimson (or red and white, depending on the athletic director). We're all for you! But lately, we want to be blue. When Duke University officials recently announced they'd be handing out free (that's right, free) iPods to all first-year students, our school spirit began to wane.

Frustration prompts schools to ban cell phones

HOBART, Ind. -- In the ongoing battle for students' attention, some Indiana schools are fighting the rise of text messaging and endless cell phone chatting by banning the phones. The phones disrupt classes and valuable instruction time, said Tony Lux, superintendent of Merrillville Community School Corp., which has banned cell phones.

Kernan, Daniels campaigns filled with young staffers

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Michelle Stevens was a fresh graduate of IU when she began running Gov. Joe Kernan's campaign office for Porter and LaPorte counties a few months ago. The 23-year-old is hardly unique in this year's highly competitive governor's race, as many of those working for Kernan and Republican challenger Mitch Daniels are younger than 30.

New York returning to normal after RNC leaves

NEW YORK -- After more than a week of press, protests and politics, many New Yorkers will return to the city today since the Republican National Convention has left town. While some in New York weathered the Republican storm, many took a week or more off work to escape the more than 50,000 people who visited the city for the convention.

New route to campus begins today

By 11:30 a.m. Friday, the Park and Ride parking lot at Bryan Park is full, except for one lone spot in the middle of the back row. Across the street, another Park and Ride lot is nearly empty, with only a few cars sprinkled throughout.

IU routs Central Michigan 41-10

IU debuts new financial software

IU plans to save millions of dollars in licensing fees and implementation costs by participating in a program to develop a free, new financial software for universities. The project was the best option to replace IU's aging financial system, said Brad Wheeler, associate vice president for research and academic computing. Wheeler said the software will manage University business such as budgeting, tracking expenses, purchasing and more.

Monroe coroner accidently shoots himself in leg Monroe County Coroner David Toumey was hospitalized with a leg wound after accidentally shooting himself while trying to demonstrate gun safety. Toumey told The Herald-Times for a story published Saturday that he was demonstrating gun safety to some people at a Lake Monroe boat ramp about 11 p.m. Wednesday when he accidentally shot himself.

'Comeback Grants' aim to encourage job growth

Monroe County was recently named "eligible" for up to $25,000 in state funds under a new state economic program that would encourage job growth, Gov. Joe Kernan said in a press release. In the past few years, many Indiana communities have been hit hard by trade-related job loss. The state's economic growth is a hot issue on the gubernatorial campaign trail.

'Freak leaks' hit Smallwood Plaza

Junior Robin Robinson was drawn to Smallwood Plaza because of its location, underground parking and gym, but she never anticipated waking up to a flood in her apartment. Three hot water pipes burst open in Smallwood Plaza apartments late Thursday night and Friday morning, causing damage to several apartments.

IUPD busts AEPi party

An IU Police Department stop of two underage students at the corner of 17th and Grant streets began a chain of events that could lead to disciplinary action against Alpha Epsilon Pi. The routine stop early Friday morning also led to an illegal possession and consumption charge against the fraternity's president, junior Nathan Schiller.

Three for the price of fun

The type of opera most people are familiar with is grand, dramatic and seen at a place like the MAC. It utilizes a full orchestra, a large cast and three or four long acts. But opera is a broad genre and there are smaller, lighter works which do not draw the same amount of attention when performed because they lack the monumental stature of Wagner and Verdi.

In its first home game of a two-game weekend between Ball State and Southwest Missouri State, the IU field hockey team dominated the Cardinals 3-0. All three IU goals were scored in the second half, one each by junior Nikki Orciuch, sophomore Lydia Schrott, and freshman Frederique Meeuwen respectively.
