New year, same problems for AD

In his last address to the Bloomington Faculty Council regarding athletics, former Athletics Director Terry Clapacs listed five major departmental concerns for new AD Rick Greenspan to tackle. The list included football, scholarship costs, gender equity, facilities and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Most of these five concerns relate to one constant problem within the athletics department -- the budget deficit.

Hurricane Jeanne devastates Haiti; death toll still climbing

GONAIVES, Haiti -- Blood swirled in knee-deep floodwaters as workers stacked bodies outside the hospital morgue Tuesday. Carcasses of pigs, goats and dogs and pieces of smashed furniture floated in muddy streams that once were the streets of this battered city. Desperate people swarmed a truck delivering water.

First multicultural sorority joins IU

Many sororities have ethnic affiliations and a diverse group women in their houses, though few of them are truly defined as multicultural. Theta Nu Xi, Multicultural Sorority, Inc., however, is the first and only of its kind at IU.

With everybody from the AFL-CIO to the Indiana Smallmouth Bass Club picking sides in this year's gubernatorial election, political endorsements could make an impact on November's election. The groups that are supporting each candidate reflect the type of image the candidates are presenting in their campaigns.

Who are Asian-Pacific Americans? Every other Wednesday until Nov. 3, the Asian Culture Center will be sponsoring a roundtable discussion allowing students to talk about myths and stereotypes of Asian-Pacific Americans and ways to dispel misconceptions. The event will be held at noon at the ACC, 807 E. 10th St. A free lunch will be provided.

As fall semester kicks into high gear, students across the country begin to brace themselves for heavy workloads. For some, this means regular trips to Starbucks for a caffeine fix, but for others, it could mean a little pill to help get through late-night cram sessions.

Violin stolen from Musical Arts Center

A student reported the theft of a $600 violin from the Musical Arts Center to the IU Police Department Friday. The theft of the violin, which the student was renting from the IU School of Music, occurred Sept. 13, according to IUPD reports.

INPIRG seeks increase in students' political awareness

In a campaign titled "The New Voters Project," the Indiana Public Interest Research Group is encouraging all students to register now in order to vote during the elections in November. With the Indiana voter registration deadline of Oct. 4 less than two weeks away, junior Vanessa Caruso, INPIRG chair, believes the time for student political action is now.

The IU campus community offers students various opportunities for philanthropy, yet very few student organizations pride themselves on giving worldwide aid. The IU International Humanitarian Committee is one such group whose philanthropic mission encompasses many countries around the world.

Annual Law Day slated for Thursday

Representatives from more than 100 law schools nationwide will congregate in the Indiana Memorial Union for Law Day Thursday. The Midwest Association of Prelaw Advisors has joined forces with IU's Health Professions and Prelaw Center to sponsor the event.

Fundamentals key to defense

Though the Hoosier football defense has been opportunistic, forcing 10 turnovers, teams have been getting up and down the field averaging 481.3 yards per game, ranking the defense at No. 108 in the country. The past two games have been rough for the Hoosier defense, as they gave up 495 yards to the University of Oregon and season-high 560 yards in a 51-32 to the University of Kentucky.

Yankees take care of Blue Jays for Loaiza's 100th win

NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi homered to end the longest slump of his career, and Esteban Loaiza finally earned his 100th career victory and first for the Yankees, leading New York over the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 Tuesday night. Gary Sheffield hit his 36th home run two days after getting a pair of cortisone shots. Alex Rodriguez almost homered for the Yankees, too, but was robbed on a spectacular catch by center fielder Vernon Wells.

Sigma Pi aims for 5th straight intramural championship

Brotherhoods are based on a will and desire to put forth the greatest effort in protecting and aiding their cohorts in any circumstance. The bond that fraternities possess includes this brotherhood; it helps unite each fraternity brother together in creating a cohesive group of guys that would go to great lengths to protect the reputation and well-being of each individual.

Indiana sees higher rate of whooping cough this year SOUTH BEND -- The number of whooping cough cases in Indiana has nearly doubled since 2003, and health officials are at a loss to explain why. Eighty-seven cases of whooping cough have been reported so far this year in Indiana, up from 44 cases recorded at the same time in 2003, health officials said.

For the past two years, billiards has been conspicuously missing from the long list of intramural sports offered by the IU RecSports program, but this fall marks its return. The program initially left campus due to lack of participation, but because students missed the program, it is back by popular demand.

'Star Wars' hits Bloomington Best Buy

Freshman Joseph Loy stood in line for more than five hours to get his copy of the "Star Wars" trilogy. Loy joined more than 200 people gathered before midnight on Monday to wait in line at Best Buy for their copy of the "Star Wars" Trilogy on DVD. Employees dressed as Storm Troopers, Imperial Guards and Darth Vader greeted "Star Wars" fans at the doors.

Nader's off the ballot in New Mexico and Arkansas, on in Maryland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Judges in New Mexico and Arkansas denied Ralph Nader access to the Nov. 2. ballot in those states Monday, but the independent presidential hopeful won a spot on the ballot in Maryland. In New Mexico, State District Judge Theresa Baca found that Nader does not qualify as an independent under state law because he is running in other states as the nominee for minor parties.

Daily grind leaves senior's plate full

After hammering the snooze button with a full fist, the typical IU student tries desperately just to get those ever-so-important five extra minutes of sleep. Getting on and successfully riding the bus is even more of a challenge, filled with constant head-nods and dozing-off. And the further into the semester, that morning shower becomes scarier and the Starbucks cups or a want for a direct IV line of coffee becomes more prevalent. And we haven't even talked about class and the struggle to pencil in a nap somewhere.
