BURSTING the comedy BUBBLE

Sellout crowds are a thing normally reserved for boy bands, presidential visits and Star Wars premieres. But All Sorts of Trouble for the Boy in the Bubble, back again this year to keep people in stitches, will be performing at the Bloomington Playwrights Project every other Saturday for $5 a head. And don't plan on coming in the door at the last minute because the first show of the year last Saturday was completely packed.

Dozens report stolen permits

Sophomore Jenna Innis came out to her car Monday morning to find two tickets -- courtesy of IU Parking Operations -- on her car, though she was parked in a space allowed by her permit. She soon realized, like several other students across campus, the parking permit she expect to see in her front window was missing.

IU employees leave jobs for overseas deployment

In addition to seeing hundreds of students travel overseas to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan, IU has also seen several employees leave to fulfill their patriotic duties. Currently, five employees are serving on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan with the Indiana National Guard.

FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Following the first gubernatorial debate for the 2004 election between Republican candidate Mitch Daniels and Democratic Governor Joe Kernan, local politicos are abuzz over Libertarian candidate Kenn Gividen. "I think the one that gained the most from this debate was the Libertarian candidate," said IU College Republican President Angel Rivera. "This is the first time during the campaign he's gotten an audience."

Student ticket prices lowered for Michigan game Saturday

In an effort to fill Memorial Stadium, the IU Athletics Department announced Monday a "Student Ticket Special." Students can purchase seats to Saturday's IU-Michigan game for $5, a discount of $10 from the usual student ticket price of $15 per game.

Fog ends tournament after round 2

Fog-covered Newport, R.I., at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, forcing the cancellation of the final round of the Adams Cup: Five holes remained in the third round when it was ruled that play could not continue. The scores at the end of Monday's second round became the final standings, placing the Hoosiers in fifth for the second consecutive week.

Video store strips Frankfort shelves of adult movies. FRANKFORT, Ind. -- The city's Family Video store is no longer renting adult movies after residents complained the tapes and DVDs violate a state law that prohibits displaying harmful material within 500 feet of a church. The company plans to challenge the constitutionality of the law, said Tim Reynolds, general counsel for Family Video, which is based in Glenview, Ill., and operates 340 stores nationwide.

Community addresses county's racial issues

About 125 concerned community members attended the city of Bloomington's Commission on the Status of Black Males and the Safe and Civil City Program's meeting last night at City Hall to discuss the topic of "Race, School Discipline, and Criminal Justice." The meeting was held to discuss racial issues surrounding black males in the Monroe County Community School Corporation and the county's legal system.

North Korea claims nuclear program

UNITED NATIONS -- North Korea said it has turned the plutonium from 8,000 spent nuclear fuel rods into nuclear weapons to serve as a deterrent against increasing U.S. nuclear threats and to prevent a nuclear war in northeast Asia. Warning that the danger of war on the Korean peninsula "is snowballing," Vice Foreign Minister Choe Su Hon provided details Monday of the nuclear deterrent that he said North Korea has developed for self-defense.

Earthquake strikes central California

PARKFIELD, Calif. -- A strong earthquake struck central California, Tuesday, that was felt from San Francisco to the Los Angeles area. There were no immediate reports of injuries. The quake, which struck at 10:15 a.m. PDT, had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 and was centered 7 miles southeast of Parkfield, the town known as California's earthquake capital, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Italy rejoices as hostages are released

ROME -- A relieved Italy broke into celebrations Tuesday as Premier Silvio Berlusconi announced the safe release of two Italian women aid workers who were kidnapped in Iraq three weeks ago. Simona Pari and Simona Torretta, both 29, were handed over to the Red Cross along with two Iraqis who were abducted with them in Baghdad on Sept. 7. Four Egyptian workers abducted last week were also freed, according to their employer.

IU mourns legendary photographer

For IU alumna Jessica Stuart, photographer Eddie Adams was a teacher, a colleague and a friend. Adams, who died Sept. 19 of amyotropic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, was a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer and educator. "He's the end of an era that can't be recaptured," Stuart said.
