Ewing Jr. headed to Georgetown

HOUSTON - Pat Ewing Jr. is headed for his father's alma mater, according to a broadcast report. NBA great Patrick Ewing told Houston television station KRIV on Wednesday that his son will transfer from Indiana to Georgetown.

Gros Louis will leave behind legacy

Years ago, Ken Gros Louis laughed at the thought of taking a job at IU, a University he imagined was tucked somewhere between the cornfields, Quonset huts and football stadiums of the Midwest. But when the New Hampshire native visited the Bloomington campus for the first time, he was immediately attracted to the relaxed atmosphere. He felt at home.

Writer David Sedaris comedic, poignant onstage

David Sedaris, a small, unimposing, quiet writer, managed to bring more than 3,000 people to their feet Tuesday night. Sedaris, the author of the runaway bestsellers "Me Talk Pretty One Day" and "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim" visited the IU Auditorium Tuesday night. The evening was organized into two rough halves: a reading and a question-and-answer session.

IU composer receives Guggenheim Fellowship

IU professor and composer in residence Don Freund has been chosen to receive a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. The more than $35,000 award will allow Freund time to pursue his artistic endeavors.

The Asian American Association will present the annual Taste of Asia Friday. The event is divided into two parts -- a talent show featuring performances by numerous student and community groups and the tasting of Asian cuisine from various restaurants in Bloomington. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.; the program begins at 5:30 p.m.

Campus angered by book publisher prices

When classes begin next fall, most students look forward to reuniting with friends, learning new ideas and getting back into the flow of another academic year. One thing most students do not enjoy about returning from the three-month exodus from Bloomington is the trip to the IU Bookstore or T.I.S. to purchase their textbooks for the upcoming semester.

Internet use on campus grows, but little time is devoted to school work

When the rent on his East Lansing, Mich., apartment is due, Mark Herberholz logs onto an Internet poker site for a few hands. He says the income from his winnings helps pay the bills and pass the time. The Michigan State senior says he spends about four hours a day playing computer games, instant messaging with friends and surfing the Internet.

NYSE to merge with Archipelago

NEW YORK -- The 213-year-old New York Stock Exchange vaulted into the top ranks of electronic stock trading Wednesday, announcing a merger with all-electronic rival Archipelago Holdings Inc. in a stunning move that will also transform the NYSE into a for-profit, publicly traded enterprise.

At a press conference Monday, cancer survivor Lance Armstrong announced that win or lose, he will end his prolific cycling career after this July's Tour De France. Armstrong cited wanting to spend more time with his three kids as the biggest reason for deciding to retire.

VATICAN CITY -- Charting a papacy in the tradition of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI pledged Wednesday to work for unity among Christians and to seek "an open and sincere dialogue" with other faiths.
