Al-Qaida linked to U.K. bombings

CAIRO, Egypt -- Al-Qaida's No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahri, claimed responsibility for the July 7 London bombings in a video aired Thursday on Al-Jazeera that included a farewell statement by a man identified as one of the four suicide attackers. It was the first explicit claim of responsibility for the blasts by the terrorist group headed by Osama bin Laden.

Balancing budget burdens

Athletes deserve to receive tutoring if they need it. And sensibly, the academic side of the University should supervise this tutoring, relieving the IU Athletics Department of temptations that could lead to academic scandals (as witnessed at other Big Ten universities). That does not, however, translate into a mandate for all students on the academic side of the school to foot the bill.

More book-banning requests filed in 2004

NEW YORK - Attempts to have library books removed from shelves increased by more than 20 percent in 2004 during the previous year, according to a new survey by the American Library Association. Three books with gay themes, including Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," were among the works most criticized.

Stone carver prospers by sculpting 'gargoyles'

BARTLETT, Ill. -- Walter S. Arnold was helping a monster break free of its stone prison. "This is actually a grotesque, not a gargoyle," the stone carver explained as he used a hydraulic lift to position the heavy figure of Indiana limestone. "Most people call them all gargoyles, but a gargoyle, technically, is a waterspout attached to a building. This guy's a freestanding figure, so he's a grotesque."

ANDERSON -- A 3-year-old girl stood on a small stool in the kitchen of her grandmother's house. She watched her grandmother prepare the meal. Eagerly, she waited for the hot skillet to cool some so her grandmother would let her cook. She learned to put a piece of cheese on a cracker and let it melt.

Local Middle Eastern band celebrates CD release with gala

Local arts leader steps down

Sally Gaskill is resigning as executive director of the Bloomington Area Arts Council after five years of service. Gaskill, whose tenure began in 2000, will step down Sept. 30, capping a successful term during which BAAC programs were greatly expanded and the council's massive debt was nearly erased.

Chancellor search enters final months

Patience has marked the search for a new Bloomington campus chancellor since it began in January, but as IU President Adam Herbert's self-imposed deadline approaches, people are eager to fill the office ‑ but with the right person. Herbert has said he hopes to appoint the chancellor by Thanksgiving, almost two years after Ken Gros Louis came out of retirement and agreed to serve as interim chancellor until administrators filled the position.

E.T. phones home via DVD twice

As if Steven Spielberg's status as king of the box office hadn't already been established by the summer of 1982, "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" only further solidified said status, while proving Spielberg's ability to dream up note-perfect family fare -- a genre he has occasionally tapped to varying degrees of success over the last 23 years, never outdoing "E.T." in terms of the number of hearts successfully warmed.
