Cutting down bureaucratic ineffiencies

·

We are under the impression that the IU Student Association is supposed to train the leaders of tomorrow. However, when we look at the IUSA budget passed last week, we find ourselves wondering what exactly our alleged student leaders are learning. What are they gaining by passing a budget where 70 percent is dedicated to operating expenses, save lessons in bureaucratic inefficiency?

'Star Wars' draws residents, alumni

·

Every time IU graduate George Starkey sits down for a cup of coffee at the Starbucks in Broad Ripple, a neighborhood on the north side of Indianapolis, someone wants to know. It happens so often that Starkey even has a name for it: He gets "Lucas-ized." "First someone turns around, and then you can start hearing necks snapping," said Starkey, who learned as a teenager of his uncanny resemblance to "Star Wars" creator George Lucas. "People say, 'Are you him?' I say, 'Just call me George.'"

Soviet Union art comes to Midwest

·

PEORIA, Ill. -- Call it a glimpse of a lost world, a world that never was but remains still, preserved in oil and canvas -- a world of workers united and equal, struggling to build a new society of justice and peace. Such was the Soviet Union's official view of itself in state-sanctioned artwork created between 1917 and 1991, a selection of which goes on display in "Behind the Iron Curtain: Russian Impressionism," which opened recently at Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences. The exhibit is testimony to the power of art -- and the eagerness of revolutionary leaders to use that power to help build a new kind of society. It is also testimony to the resilience of the artists themselves, who managed to create notable work even within the rigid strictures of a totalitarian state that banned abstraction and other forms of nonrepresentational 20th century art.

Mind your manners at Fashion Week

·

NEW YORK -- Anyone who knows anything about the fashion industry knows that fashion people have a certain way of doing things. We tend to follow social rules not written in any book or pamphlet, but rules that have been passed down to us through years of training.

A happy hangover

·

Remember that feeling you get after Little 500 week? Seven days of drinking like a fish, and you've convinced yourself that seven Budweisers and three Jager bombs are a part of a balanced breakfast. Eventually, after a barrage of bars and consumption of kegs, you wake up Sunday morning to the feeling that Gary Coleman is tap dancing in your head.

Hoosiers take week off to prepare for Badgers

·

Technically, the IU football team had last week off. However, that did not stop it from hitting the practice field, watching film and recruiting players. IU head coach Terry Hoeppner said the Hoosiers maintained their normal practice routine during the past week and are prepared to face the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday.

IU coaches get down and dirty

·

Aggressiveness isn't just an attribute IU softball team members have -- it's also an attribute of the coaches. Just take first-year assistant coach Michelle Puls as an example. During a practice earlier this year, she said she was criticized by some of her players for not getting dirty and diving for a ball.

Still unblemished, IU heads into Big Ten play

·

Terry Hoeppner has said it again and again since arriving at IU, via billboards and radio announcements, word of mouth and press conferences: "Crowds help win games." Tomorrow, Hoeppner and the Hoosiers will battle the merits of their own motto as they open their Big Ten season with a visit to No. 17-ranked Wisconsin and its legion of loyal Badger fans that pack Camp Randall Stadium every Saturday.

For the Indians, 3 wins and they're in

·

CLEVELAND -- The mind-bending mathematics and head-scratching scenarios aren't so complicated. And the big weekend series isn't quite so big anymore, either. For the Cleveland Indians, it's become pretty simple: three wins and they're in the AL playoffs.

Home not so humble as 3 ranked opponents come to Bloomington

·

The comforts of home might not be evident this weekend as the Hoosiers welcome the University of Notre Dame, Louisiana State University and Kansas State University to Bloomington. All three finished in the top 100 of last season's Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. And all three will highlight the field at this weekend's Hoosier Classic.

Another difficult field awaits IU in South Bend

·

The saying "Our sport is your sport's punishment" is one commonly found on the back of a cross country runner's shirt. While some athletes shy away from the activity, those on the IU women's cross country team wouldn't dream of doing anything else. Despite the negative stereotype placed on running, a nationally recognized program like IU's cannot be ignored.
