Shift reality and chase your dream

·

Confucius once said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Thousands of years later, this quote still rings true. Nothing worthwhile in this world has been achieved without persistence and a little vision into the future.

Damaged asbestos likely in 4 dorms

·

Extensive damage to asbestos in some dorms at IU is likely exposing students to the hazardous material, said Tomas Beauchamp, a former employee of the Office of Environmental, Health and Safety Management. Ceilings of some dorms and common rooms in Briscoe, McNutt and Forest Quads and Tulip Tree Apartments contain damaged asbestos, Beauchamp said, leaving open the possibility of inhalation of the substance's fibers by the public.

During its first meeting of the year, the IU Student Association Congress was powerless to vote or make decisions as a unified body because too many people skipped meetings. As a rule, to vote on or pass legislation, IUSA Congress must meet quorum, a two-thirds showing of the 62 elected representatives.

IU to play waiting game after OSU tie

·

Since 1976, Mike Freitag has been connected to IU soccer. Sunday afternoon, the second-year coach experienced "one of the most disappointing games" of his career. In the team's final Big Ten game of the season and with tournament seeding at stake, the Hoosiers left Yeagley Field with a 2-2 tie against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

·

The No. 8 IU field hockey team's winning streak is over. After 10 consecutive wins, the Hoosiers were defeated by No. 11 Iowa 2-1 in overtime. The loss is only the Hoosiers' second of the season, and their first since a Sept. 4 loss at No. 1 Wake Forest. IU's record now stands at 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten. "Iowa played a great game," coach Amy Robertson said. "They contained us defensively and negated our speed."

Prep school standout changes commitment

·

Armon Bassett is no longer another Indiana high school basketball standout who slipped through IU's fingers. After losing recruiting battles for in-state stars Greg Oden, Josh McRoberts and Luke Zeller, IU coach Mike Davis nearly lost Bassett to Missouri in August. The former Terre Haute South High School standout had verbally committed to the Tigers but changed his mind after attending Hoosier Hysteria earlier this month.

Houston: Texans have a problem

·

HOUSTON -- The Indianapolis Colts want their fast start to pave the way to a big finish. Peyton Manning was uncharacteristically sloppy at times, fumbled for the first time this season and was intercepted on a poorly thrown pass, but he did enough to lead Indianapolis to a 38-20 victory Sunday against the winless Houston Texans that gave the Colts their first 7-0 record.

What the Buck?

·

What the buck? What happened? Where were the Hoosiers Saturday afternoon? The offense was dormant, the defense relented and now I have loads of mail coming in from Buckeye Nation declaring themselves the greatest football team in the history of the world. In Friday's column, I dubbed Ohio State the bullies of the Big Ten. And Saturday, they took the Hoosiers' lunch money.

Cyber academia

·

Friday's The Chronicle of Higher Education carried the news that Stanford University has forged a deal with Apple Computers to make lectures, student-produced music and sports commentary available as free downloads via the iTunes Music Store. This follows www.pickaprof.com's move to offer lectures as free downloadable MP3s (Indiana Daily Student, Sept. 29), and Purdue University's announcement that lectures, previously available on library cassettes, will be podcast (The Chronicle of Higher Education, Aug. 31). Not to be outdone, IU is making its iStream lectures available as iTunes podcasts.
