Hoosiers set for home doubleheader

Cincinnati natives freshman John Mellencamp and sophomore Kevin Noschang will get a chance tonight to show their former youth coaches how they have developed at the collegiate level. The IU men's soccer team will play a double-header tonight with a split-squad versus IUPUI at 4:30 p.m., with the Cincinnati Kings of the United Soccer Leagues Second Division following at 7:30 p.m.

Hoosiers continue road struggles at Evansville

EVANSVILLE -- The IU baseball team continued its road trip last night with an 11-4 loss at the University of Evansville, marking its fifth loss in the first six games of an 11-game road stint.

War stories

I attended the annual reunion of the 73rd Bomb Wing in Memphis, Tenn. last weekend. The 73rd flew B-29s from Saipan to bomb Japan during World War II. I saw pictures and heard stories from the aging men of the "Greatest Generation." Many of their stories made me think about the discussion of the Iraq War and how it will be described in 60 years.

The future was looking bright for the Duke lacrosse team: The team has been ranked No. 2 in the nation and was expected to contend for another NCAA championship title this season. That is until recently, when it was suspended for the rest of the season following charges of gang rape.

Stuck in the middle with IU

Recently members of the IUPUI staff and faculty have voiced concerns regarding, what they perceive to be, lack of attention from IU President Adam Herbert. Some feel the Bloomington campus receives far too much attention and far too many resources from University administrators, which is a claim that is not entirely unfounded. It is true that the Bloomington campus does receive a disproportionate amount of attention relative to other campuses, but it does so for good reasons.

IU can provide grad students better benefits now or later. It's in the University's best interests to do it now.

It's not often that I make common cause with the Graduate Employees Organization. Don't get me wrong, there are folks in the GEO who I know and I quite like -- it's just that our ideological differences tend to lead us to disagree on things. However, regarding the University's short-changing of graduate student health and dental insurance, we find ourselves on the same page. Furthermore, recent statements made by officials of the Graduate and Professional Students Organization -- grad students' official voice with the administration -- indicate that the GPSO is on this very page as well.

Millions march in France over labor laws

PARIS -- Demonstrators opposed to a new jobs law swarmed parts of downtown Paris Tuesday, throwing stones, tearing down street signs and ripping up park benches. Riot police, firing tear gas canisters and making several charges, carried away protesters in handcuffs. Police said at least 1 million people poured into the streets around the country in the latest protests against the law, which makes it easier to fire young workers. Organizers said 3 million people marched.
