Eigenmann RA dies in car crash

Senior Alvin Henry, 21, was a popular Resident Assistant in Eigenmann Hall, known for his sense of humor and infectious singing of R & B hits. "At the start of the year I asked someone on his floor if you like your new RA, and he said, 'Yeah, we love Alvin! He's always singing in the shower,'" Eigenmann Graduate Supervisor Megan Hutchison said. Henry's voice was silenced forever Saturday night shortly after 8 p.m. when the car in which he was a passenger lost control and hit a semi on northbound I-65, just outside Crown Point, Ind., according to an Indiana State Police news release. Henry was ejected from the vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. Police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

5 dead in eastern Kentucky coal mine explosion

HOLMES MILL, Ky. -- Mary Middleton said her husband had been working in the mines since he was 18. Denise Bean's stepfather came from a family of miners. Both were among five miners killed in an underground explosion in an eastern Kentucky coal mine early Saturday. A sixth miner walked away from the blast, Gov. Ernie Fletcher said.

Suicide bomber kills 13 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A suicide bomber killed at least 12 other people and injured 17 when he blew himself up Sunday in a downtown Baghdad restaurant frequented by police. The attack came as Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki pledged to soon fill vacancies in his two key security ministries.

Final-round surge not enough for IU

The IU men's golf team finished in a tie for 11th place in the East Regional of the 2006 NCAA Tournament with a final score 287. IU was one of six squads in the 27-team field to shoot under par.

Under legislation passed in California's State Assembly last week, public college officials would have limited ability to censor student-run newspapers. The bill provides protection for college journalists and their free-speech rights. The one piece of content college officials would be able to regulate is hate speech.

'Major Moves' ahead

Gov. Mitch Daniels announced Wednesday the distribution of funds from the lease of the Indiana Toll Road. $58.5 million of the "Major Moves" bankroll will go toward funding five new road construction projects and one preservation project in Monroe County, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation Web site.
