You’ve seen his smarmy grin. In the IMU, on the square and plastered over the kiosks. His flyers beckon you with the question: “Who is Ron Paul, and why is he trying to save my country?” Aaron Jones, a leader in IU Students for Ron Paul, said Paul is a “shining gem in a pile of shit.” Unfortunately, I didn’t have to think very hard about which “pile” Aaron was talking about. He was talking about American politics.

Singer-songwriter David Bazan will perform at 8 p.m. today in the John Waldron Arts Center Auditorium. The concert will be one of many in the upcoming months for Bazan, who is promoting his debut solo EP “Fewer Moving Parts.”

Since the inception of Napster, the Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA, has been extremely active in efforts to protect the intellectual property of its members by attacking anyone and everyone who commits copyright infringement via Internet file sharing. However, it has not been particularly successful, which has led it to seek help. The RIAA now is asking universities to assist it in suing its own students.

In my relatively brief existence, I have both heard of and witnessed some horrifying, logic-defying fads. If you aren’t sure what I’m talking about, just go ask your parents to see their old pet rocks. To me, no fad has ever seemed as pointless as the water bottle craze that has taken the U.S. by storm in the last decade. In my hometown of Memphis, Tenn., during high school it became “cool” to walk the hallways flagrantly toting around a bottle of Fiji-brand water. This water was supposedly cleaner and fresher than our own tap water, simply because it came from an artesian well several continents away.

Get out of jail free

For the great number of convicted felons who have committed serious violations of the law in the state of Indiana, they can be almost certain that they will breathe free air again. And if they keep their heads down and wait on a literal “get out of jail free” card from the Indiana Parole Board, this will most likely occur sooner, rather than later.

3 students busted for illegal downloads

Three IU students were named in a lawsuit filed Thursday by the Recording Industry Association of America, according to a news release. The students are accused of copyright infringement stemming from use of peer-to-peer downloading programs on the IU network.
