Political baseball

I’m a baseball fan, so please allow me the liberty to make an analogy between the current state of the presidential election and a historic moment in baseball. This week, John McCain said at a rally in Virginia Beach that he has Barack Obama and Joe Biden “just where we want them.” First of all, if this was McCain’s plan all along, then I’d like to suggest a safer strategy that I like to call “actually trying to win.” It seems a little dangerous to spot your opponent a 10-point lead in the polls before making a move, but I suppose McCain was just trying to make it a fair fight.

New company to bring jobs

More than 75 new jobs and $8.5 million in help for household incomes will come to Bloomington by 2010, Gov. Mitch Daniels and health officials from Predictive Physiology and Medicine announced Tuesday.

The fans need a new AD to lift their spirits

The IU Athletics Department has had a rough past 12 months. Real rough.Things were much better for the IU faithful just a year ago on the week of Hoosier Hysteria. Former men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson and the Hoosiers had high expectations heading into the season. Some even thought the duo of Eric Gordon and D.J. White could lead the team to the Final Four.

Hoosiers miss Middleton

It was all beginning to unfold – the Iowa game, the season, everything. One blow and the Hoosiers’ defense is down, lying flat on the canvas. In more cases than one, it’s unable to gain consciousness before the 60 minutes expire. Saying IU has trouble recovering from its opponent’s punches is an understatement. Whether it’s a run up the gut or a play-action pass, the Cream and Crimson’s corner is often on the losing side. We saw it especially against Ball State, Michigan State and Iowa.

Lynch’s success last year still in some fans’ minds

It was barely into the third quarter during Saturday’s game against Iowa when the “boos” started coming down. Eventually losing 45-9, the IU football team felt its fans show their displeasure simply by leaving, making the student section as empty as the North End Zone Project. For IU student junior Rich Lesser, the 2008 football season has shown the Hoosiers are once again comfortable at the bottom of the Big Ten. “It’s what I expected,” Lesser said. “I didn’t think we’d be as good as last year, but I thought we may have a chance to be as good as last year. As of now, it doesn’t look too good.” With a lack of support in the student section throughout their current four game losing streak, IU coach Bill Lynch urged the fan base during his weekly press conference Tuesday to continue to give the Hoosiers support regardless of the team’s 2-4 record.

McCain, Obama face off tonight

For the third and final time, Democratic nominee Barack Obama and Republican nominee John McCain will face off tonight. But this time it might take some convincing for the candidates to gain the interest of IU students.

Daniels to promote INShape Indiana

Gov. Mitch Daniels will visit IU today to convene his annual summit. The purpose of this year’s summit is to provide awareness on the health of the children of Indiana. The 2008 Indiana Health Summit, part of INShape Indiana, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Indiana Memorial Union.

Restating the words of Herman B Wells, IU President Michael McRobbie said “Make no small plans for Indiana University,” in his State of the University address Tuesday. McRobbie delivered the speech at IU-Purdue University Indianapolis on his goals and initiatives, commending progress made and adding to his previous ambitious plans – even in the face of a credit crisis.

Ambassador emphasizes Israel, Iraq

In a discussion held Monday night in Whittenberger Auditorium, Jordan’s Prince and Ambassador to the United States Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein emphasized the need for negotiations to solve issues in two main areas in the Middle East – Iraq and Israel. The auditorium was filled for the talk, during which the Jordanian ambassador to the United States sat at a table with Feisal Istrabadi, a former Iraqi U.N. Ambassador and visiting law professor. The talk focused on a range of topics, including Jordan’s position in ongoing conflicts and actions Zeid thought the United States could take.

By 5 on a Friday night, most IU students are finishing school and making plans for the weekend, but senior Clark Baker, 25, is just starting his day. “The hours aren’t bad,” he said. “But my sleep schedule is weird.” Baker is one of the 25 employees that serve more than 500 customers that come to Kilroy’s Bar & Grill on a typical Friday night. Security to heighten during candidates’ visit

With Gov. Mitch Daniels, Democratic challenger Jill Long Thompson and Libertarian challenger Andy Horning debating at the IU Auditorium tonight, attendees can expect heightened security measures, though they probably won’t see them, said IU Police Department Capt. Jerry Minger. “We always plan for the worst and hope for the best,” Minger said.
