Retail & Design Career Fair held today at IMU

Students can take advantage of an opportunity to obtain internships and full-time positions in these industries at the first Retail & Design Career Fair hosted by the Career Development Center, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union.

ELECTION GUIDE: Hill, Sodrel and Schansberg fight for 9th District

The race for Indiana’s 9th Congressional District is coming to a close, and Indiana voters will choose Tuesday between two very familiar candidates, and one newcomer. Mike Sodrel and Rep. Baron Hill (D-Ind.) have contested Southern Indiana’s congressional seat each election since 2002, making the 9th district one of the most competitive swing districts on the national stage. At the same time, Dr. Eric Schansberg, an IU-Southeast New Albany professor of economics, is shaking up the race with an independent perspective.

Man arrested in connection with bank robberies

Ricky L. Underhill, 35, of Bloomington, was arrested at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in connection with two recent Bloomington bank robberies, said Joe Qualters, Bloomington Police Department captain.

IU grad shares art during residency

Haunted train to be open only Friday

While haunted houses might be some of the attractions students encounter on Halloween, the Bakers Junction Haunted Train could provide a different type of fright. Located in Smithville, Ind., Bakers Junction is a railroad museum that houses a haunted train. There’s also a haunted house and a kiddie haunted house at the train station.

My position misrepresented

The op-ed by Yahya Chaudhry, “Praise for anti-zionism,” is so filled with factual errors, ad hominems and outright bigotry that I am shocked it was published by a fine student newspaper without elementary fact-checking. Chaudhry accuses a United States senator, who happens to be Jewish, of dual loyalty – a canard that dates back to the discredited protocols of the Elders of Zion. He accuses me of being “crazed” because I support a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict. He misquotes several Israeli leaders and falsely characterizes their position. He places several purported statements in quotation marks without revealing their source, beyond saying that they are “Israeli leaders.” He describes Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza as a “violent conquest” without mentioning that the 1967 War, which led to Israel’s occupation, was started by the Arab states, and that Israel has ended its occupation of the Gaza.

Column sparked debate

I would like to commend The Indiana Daily Student for printing the opinion piece “Praise for anti-Zionism.” While I might not agree with the opinions expressed in the column, it is important for a student publication to print pieces that address taboo subjects. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been and will continue to be an extremely difficult issue in international relations.

Mitch has been all about change

In your editorial Wednesday, you wrote, “neither Jill Long Thompson nor (Mitch) Daniels is running on a platform of serious change or upheaval.” Where has the IDS Editorial Board been for the last four years? Gov. Daniels has pushed through a number of major public policy initiatives, including the “Major Moves” plan to upgrade infrastructure throughout the state, Daylight Savings Time, leasing the Toll Road (which provided a huge sum of money for infrastructure improvements), privatizing aid to the poor, major property tax reform and a balanced budget.

Obama not dangerous

In response to Chase Cooper’s Wednesday column, “Obama’s most dangerous association”:Mr. Cooper claims that an Obama administration would pursue a “radical ideology” that robs Americans of their “individual rights” and the fruits of their hard work. May I ask what is so radical about middle class tax cuts? Or making college financially feasible for more high school graduates? How about guaranteeing every child has access to health insurance? My educated guess is that most readers of this paper would answer those questions with a “nothing,” “nothing,” and “my God, nothing!” Offering every citizen a decent shot at life if they’re willing to work for it isn’t radical. And it’s not socialist. It’s called the American way.

Down to the wire

In the last week of the election, the polls are showing the race tightening, and it is looking more and more like the election will come down to the wire. Since the weekend polls showed Barack Obama leading by margins of 12 and 8 percentage points by Zogby and Rasmussen respectively, those leads have shrunk to 5 and 3. So, why is Obama not gaining in his margin? After all, John McCain is a Republican, and the current president is a Republican. Therefore, McCain will just make the problems worse, right? Well, quite simply, no. The American people are starting to truly understand Obama’s economic policies, and they are wondering if he is the savior they once thought he was. With the ailing economy the most important issue for many voters, the question of whose policies will help the economy will likely be the deciding question of the election.

A fighting voice for students

To press upon students at IU the importance of voting in this election, I use one argument: Vote because no one thinks you will and because, for the first time, you are able to cast your vote for a candidate who isn’t silent on issues of importance. Voice your desire for change and recognition in this political system. Vote for Barack Obama. In September, Students for Change, a combination of College Democrats and Students for Barack Obama, went to the Bloomington City Council and fought on behalf of the entire student body to convince the council to bring an early voting location to campus. Student representatives argued that impressive student voter turnout would be worth the city’s time and energy. In a compromise, the representatives won three days of early voting at IU. Students for Change believes voting should be the easiest thing any student does this semester.

Get to work!

Like many seniors at IU, I’ve been contemplating my options after graduation. The decision to forego professional school obviously complicates things a bit. These anxieties are only compounded by our economy and gloomy job outlook. It seems more than ever that I might have to compromise and apply for jobs I wouldn’t have considered otherwise. And I’m not the only one. From personal experience alone, socially conscious students are more likely than ever to enter the corporate field, and this is a welcome development.
