A fighting voice for students

To press upon students at IU the importance of voting in this election, I use one argument: Vote because no one thinks you will and because, for the first time, you are able to cast your vote for a candidate who isn’t silent on issues of importance.

Voice your desire for change and recognition in this political system. Vote for Barack Obama.

In September, Students for Change, a combination of College Democrats and Students for Barack Obama, went to the Bloomington City Council and fought on behalf of the entire student body to convince the council to bring an early voting location to campus. Student representatives argued that impressive student voter turnout would be worth the city’s time and energy. In a compromise, the representatives won three days of early voting at IU. Students for Change believes voting should be the easiest thing any student does this semester.

The early voting on campus was a success and a perfect opportunity to bring national, state and local Democratic politics to more than 11,000 new registered voters on IU’s campus. The group was only able to put so much work in because they believe in the positive and issue-oriented message Barack Obama has given throughout his campaign. Without this initial belief in what he fights for, none of their efforts would have been successful.

Barack Obama’s unique and fresh focus on the challenges and hurdles that come with the 21st century economy that students are faced with should bring everyone at IU to the polls. By recognizing the importance of all citizens and the issues that affect them, Barack Obama has reached all demographics. His policy initiatives and big-picture solutions are refreshing, and young people – no matter their party affiliation – find they trust what he is tries to do all across the United States.

By casting your vote for Barack Obama, you do more than just vote for a Democrat.

You choose energy alternatives for your upcoming job security. You choose an investment in smart health care policy for your well-being. You choose an approach to education for your future. You choose a tone to send this nation forward for the next four years.

Barack Obama believes it is unacceptable that high school students aren’t made aware of college opportunities and don’t go to college simply for financial reasons.

It is unacceptable that we rely on hostile nations for oil when domestic production of alternative and renewable energies would create employment and energy independence.

It is unacceptable that our current health care plan is too costly and leaves too many people suffering and burdened with high premiums.

You have the power to choose a candidate who believes in answers that will help turn our economy around, the opportunity to go to college, ways to increase domestic energy production, solutions to end the war in Iraq and a sensible health care plan.

Choose change over the status quo and unity over fear. Choose Barack Obama when you vote.
