Sophomore runner wins 2 events, earns career best time at invite

Sophomore Rachelle Boone won the 60- and 200-meter dashes at the exhibition Smith Barney Invitational Saturday at IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis' National Institute for Fitness and Sport facility.

Career bests good sign for Indiana invitational

Two teams failed to make the trip Friday to Bloomington for the open men's indoor track meet, but that did not stop the Hoosiers from setting six career bests. The University of Louisville and Eastern Kentucky University did not make it because of bad weather. IU and University of Indianapolis proceeded without them.

Hoosiers hang on to win despite difficulties

For the first time in 17 days, coach Kathi Bennett has a reason to smile. After three consecutive losses had plunged IU from second to seventh in the Big Ten standings, the Hoosiers righted the ship Sunday with a 83-76 win over Ohio State.

Weekend competition ends in tennis victory

The women's tennis team made quick work of its competition this weekend, routing Bowling Green and Ball State 7-0. IU (4-0) didn't lose a singles match, keeping its season perfect.

Hoosiers win close match at Notre Dame

The men's tennis team started the season well with a road victory Thursday against Notre Dame. The match came down to two close doubles teams, as senior Ricardo Jordan and junior Rahman Smiley upset the nation's 38th ranked team of Javier Taborga and Aaron Talarico 9-8 (12-10). Junior Zach Held and senior Paul Jacobson also won, beating Brian Farrell and Andrew Laflin 9-8 (7-5). The six singles matches were split, as Hoosiers Jacobson, Held and senior Ian Arons were victorious.

Hoosiers split weekend set, fall behind in Big Ten standings

The wrestling squad took three out of four matches this weekend, but the sole loss turned out to be a crucial one. Sunday afternoon's 22-11 loss against 9th-ranked Ohio State drops the Hoosiers to 1-2 in Big Ten competition, as the Buckeyes squashed the Hoosers' hopes of moving up in the national rankings.

Michigan State outplays 2nd-ranked Hoosiers

The hockey team was swept this weekend at Michigan State University. A last-minute empty-net goal resulted in a 7-5 loss Friday, while two goals in the final five minutes of the third period equaled a 4-2 Hoosier loss Saturday. "I think we got outplayed from top to bottom," junior forward and assistant captain Bryan Grant said. "We didn't come out to play Friday night. Once we got the lead, we went back to not playing very well. And Saturday we were terrible."

Swimmer's debut successful, but IU falls to Michigan

In a meet that started with a ceremony to honor the seniors of the IU men's swimming and diving team and ended in a loss, it was a freshman who stole the show. On Senior Day Saturday, freshman Claes Andersson won both of his single events and proved to be an important part of the 400-yard freestyle relay.

McDoel Gardens divided on issue

James R. Davis has lived in the McDoel Gardens neighborhood for much of his life. His parents built a house there decades ago, and he now owns a his own home there. He's paid his taxes and filed all the paperwork with the city whenever he's wanted to make exterior renovations, and he's worried that the property will soon be subject to another level of bureaucracy.

Ticket joins list of IUSA candidacies

Labeling its six campus priorities "A Student Quality of Life Platform," Monday, The Golden Ticket announced its candidacy for IU Student Association offices. The Golden Ticket is the fourth group to join the race since the Jan. 18 kickoff. The Golden Ticket will only have executive office candidates and no congressional candidates, members said.

2-car crash on I-65 kills Frankfort couple, 2 Schererville teens RENSSELAER, Ind. -- Two Schererville teens and a Frankfort couple died Sunday when their cars collided on Interstate 65 after the teenagers' car crossed the median into oncoming traffic. State Police said Heather Lager, 17, and Emily Zeplakay, 19, were northbound on I-65 about four miles northwest of Rensselaer when Lagar lost control of her Mazda sedan and veered into the median.

Paul Hager said he wants to make it clear that he isn't evil. "What's evil about getting your message out?" asked the 50-year old software engineer and Bloomington Libertarian. "Politics has two functions: one, as a vehicle for spreading your message, and two, getting yourself elected." The two are related, said Hager, who has run twice for Congress and once for Senate on the Libertarian ticket, against Ind. Sen. Richard Lugar and U.S. Rep. John Hostettler.

Program seeks to help students

For the second year, the University's year-round Upward Bound project is preparing students in grades nine through 12 for a brighter future. The program looks at middle and high schools to find struggling students and aim them toward college. Prospective students must be either low-income or first-generation college attendees. Upward Bound programs operate on grants from the Department of Education.

City plagued by disasters

Harnish Panchal, who owns an Internet service providing company, lost one of his two offices and the damage in the other building is yet to be assessed because there are cracks in the walls and pillars and it is too dangerous to venture in to the building even now. Anshul Singh, who works for Hewlett Packard, is living at other people's houses with his family.
