University to take case to Statehouse

Members of the IU Student Association, along with prominent IU administrators, are taking their push for increased higher education funding to the Statehouse today. IU President Myles Brand; senior Meredith Suffron, IU Student Association president; Dean Hertzler, IU's student trustee; and Kirk White, director of Hoosiers for Higher Education are confirmed speakers at the IUSA rally to take place at 4 p.m. today in the Statehouse rotunda.

City's efforts recognized in Tree City program

Bloomington is a tree-friendly kind of place. At least, that's what the National Arbor Day Foundation says. The city has been named a Tree City USA. The naming marks the 17th consecutive year Bloomington has received the recognition.

Apology might free troops

I really don't want to grow up

Former cheerleader shares message

When Kelly Craig went on a vacation to Colorado with her family and boyfriend the summer after her freshman year at IU, she never would have guessed that two years later she would be telling hundreds of other students about it. While there, she was in a car with her brother and former IU basketball star Luke Recker, whom she was dating at the time. Their car was hit by a drunken driver. The driver of their car was killed, and Craig was paralyzed. Her brother suffered brain damage.

Lake Monroe home to bird-watchers

On a still, frigid Sunday morning at Lake Monroe, Scott Evans' breath turned into little clouds as he exhaled. Evans is one of about 50 bird-watchers active in Bloomington, a number estimated by Ross Brittain, a board member of the the local Sassafras Audubon Society. At 8 a.m., Evans bundles up and equips himself with binoculars, telescopes and books.

Opening day foretells things to come

Last Monday was a special day for me, and for many students on this campus. Not only was the men's college basketball championship game that night, but most major league baseball teams played their opening games. Drag queens take the stage

Drag rocked the IU Auditorium Friday night as the 10th annual Miss Gay IU pageant performed on the Auditorium's stage for the first time. A contestant who wanted to be identified only as "Staci Stevens" was crowned Miss Gay IU 2001 after three and a half hours of competition. Contestants competed in several categories, including interviews, talent and evening wear.

Residents wake to fire, smoke

Law student Robert Brandt said he thought his smoke alarm was malfunctioning when it went off early Sunday morning. After fumbling with it, he looked out the window of his third-floor apartment and found that he was wrong. Seeing smoke outside, he got dressed and went to the front door -- his apartment's only exit -- to leave. "I opened the door and got hit with a wall of smoke," he said.
