IU student killed in car wreck

Senior Jonathon Fillippo was ready for the next step in his life. He was less than an hour away from Bloomington, ready to return to school for his last two weeks before graduation. He had just finished an internship with the VanBuren Township Fire Department and was about to pursue his life goal of becoming a firefighter in Chicago.

Five Hoosiers scored as IU pounded Virginia Commonwealth 5-0 Sunday in the third round of the NCAA tournament, setting up a matchup against No. 1 UCLA this week for a ticket to the final four. Sunday's win marked the final home game for coach Jerry Yeagley, who is one win from reaching the College Cup for the second time in three years and 16th time overall.

Two U.S. soldiers killed in Iraqi ambush

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Guerrillas killed two U.S. soldiers and wounded a third in an ambush in western Iraq, a military statement said Sunday. A day earlier, seven Spanish intelligence agents and two Japanese diplomats died in separate attacks near Baghdad.

Online shopping big for students this year

Chelsea Perry logs onto her eBay account to check the list of items she bid on last week. The Coach purse she hopes to win has only three hours left in the auction, and Perry is still the highest bidder. She will most likely go to class and immediately return home to check her status a few times more before the time period has lapsed. Perry, a 20-year-old junior, only began shopping online last year.

Events planned for World AIDS Day

New fee's purpose reviewed

Freshman Emily Hanover doesn't worry about the cost of an IU education that much. After all, she doesn't have to pay for her time here -- her parents take care of that. However, even she knows that it puts a little more of a burden on her family because they now have to pay an extra $1,000 fee every year she attends IU. "I really don't think about the fee that much since I don't actually foot the bills, but I'm sure my dad thinks about it," Hanover said.

Convicted sniper may testify in accomplice's trial

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- Convicted sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad could find himself in another courtroom this week, this time as a witness in the trial of his alleged partner in crime, an 18-year-old who sees him as a father figure. Lee Boyd Malvo's lawyers have asubpoenaed Muhammad and plan to call him to the stand this week.

Students to participate in events for World AIDS Day

IU's Student Global AIDS Campaign chapter will participate in World AIDS Day today in order to enhance education and awareness of the disease. Five hundred luminaries will be lit today from Third Street to Indiana Avenue and then around Dunn Meadow to memorialize victims of AIDS. Some of these luminaries will have individual names of AIDS victims written on them.

IU researchers who examined tax records found more than 2,100 millionaires across the state, with the greatest concentration in the Indianapolis area. IU's Indiana Business Research Center and Kelley School of Business released findings Monday from the study and a report which found Indiana is more dependent on property and individual income taxes than other states.
