Penn State dominates IU

Led by senior guard Kelly Mazzante's 24 points, No. 5 Penn State (18-3, 10-0 Big Ten) pulled away in the second half for a 66-49 win over IU (10-11, 3-7 Big Ten). Mazzante missed only one shot in the second half as the Lady Lions continued their best-ever start in Big Ten play. Tenacious defense and the free throw shooting of junior forward Jenny DeMuth kept the Hoosiers within four of Penn State at halftime. DeMuth was a perfect eight for eight from the charity stripe in the first half, and Mazzante, the Big Ten's all-time leading scorer, was held to seven points.

West lecture at IU Auditorium sounds a 'blue note'

In a lecture peppered with allusions ranging from Socrates to Billie Holiday and Martin Luther King Jr. to John Coltrane, Cornel West urged his listeners to examine the ugly side of American history in his lecture Thursday at the IU Auditorium.

Hoosiers prep for Big Ten's with Indiana Invitational

The IU women's track and field team competes in the Indiana Invitational today and tomorrow at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse. Twenty-six different universities or track clubs are represented in the Indiana Invitational with either full team squads or select individuals competing. Last weekend, IU traveled to Columbia, Mo., and competed in the Tiger Classic at the University of Missouri. This meet did not keep a team score, but junior sprinter Ara Towns earned IU's first NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.43 seconds, which also set the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse record.

No place like home for IU

The drive to the Big Ten Indoor Championships begins this weekend at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse as the Hoosiers host the two-day Indiana Invitational, beginning Friday and concluding Saturday. The meet serves as a simulation of the Big Ten Indoor meet, particularly by adding qualifying rounds and preliminary heats to several events, thereby spreading the competition over two days.

Game ruins seats

Hey fellas, what's cooler than being cool? IU's shooting in the second half! As we all know by now, 15 percent is good when you are saving money on your car insurance. When it is your field goal percentage in the second half of the game, it is quite the opposite. Illinois and IU combined to put together the most abysmal basketball performance I have seen since high school, if not before then. The Illini won, despite tying their season-low for points scored, the other game being a 19-point loss to Providence.

Judge rules Clarett eligible NEW YORK -- Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett was ruled eligible for the NFL draft Thursday by a federal judge who concluded the league's rule violates antitrust laws. U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin ordered the NFL to let Clarett enter April's draft, a decision that could clear the path for others. The league will appeal.

IU eyes Golden Gopher battle

The Hoosier wrestling squad looks to shrug off a close loss to No. 2 Illinois Saturday by hosting the Minnesota Golden Gophers this weekend in Big Ten conference action. After losing a couple of close matches to the Fighting Illini that decided the outcome, IU, which is 17-5 on the year, and 1-2 in league play, will try to bounce back this Saturday with a strong performance.

Financing through football

Last week, Athletic Director Terry Clapacs addressed concerns that a $2 million structural deficit continues to leave the athletic department in the red. Clapacs cited the struggling football program as a reason for lacking revenue. Overcoming the deficit is a complex endeavor that will not easily be solved. Short-term solutions may lead to temporary relief, but real progress will require a change that can lead to an increase over time.

'Chicano' exhibit opens in Indianapolis

"Chicano," the first exhibit of its kind ever to travel to the Midwest, opened Saturday at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. The five-year, 15-city national tour will remain on exhibit in Indiana through May 5.
