Reigning champs set sights

The uncertain future of where the NCAA men's soccer tournament selection committee would place the IU men's soccer team in the tournament was on the minds of the team members as they gathered to watch ESPNEWS' broadcast of the selection show Monday at The City Grille. The defending NCAA national champions made an early exit from the Big Ten tournament last Friday as Michigan State defeated the Hoosiers 2-1.

Hearting Huckabees: Sudan native uses experience in role

Ger Duany was first surrounded by the drama of a civil war-torn country and then fate led him to the drama of the American silver screen. Duany is originally from Sudan, but considers Bloomington home. He came to the United States as a refugee when he was only 16. Not only was he a real refugee, but he plays one in the new movie "I (Heart) Huckabees."

Out in the Cold

The holidays are approaching and the weather keeps getting colder. In and around Monroe County an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people are without a place to call home. Monday night, members of the Indiana Student Public Interest Research Group held a documentary screening at 7 p.m. in Woodburn Hall 120.

Alumnus Rod Paige leaves post in Bush administration

IU alumnus Rod Paige resigned his post as Secretary of Education Monday. In his resignation letter to the president, Paige said he would vacate his position at the end of President George W. Bush's first term unless a successor is not named.

Powell, 3 other Bush Cabinet members resign

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Colin Powell and three other Cabinet members have resigned, escalating the shake-up of President Bush's second-term team. Senior administration officials said Monday that national security adviser Condoleezza Rice was most likely to succeed Powell.

Health Center hours change for holidays The IU Health Center's holiday hours begin Nov. 24, the first day of IU's Thanksgiving break. That day, the IUHC will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Nov. 25, Thanksgiving Day, and the day after, the IUHC will be closed all day. It will re-open when fall classes resume Nov. 29 at the regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Class seeks inspiration at 9-11 site

Bonds wins 7th MVP award

NEW YORK -- Barry Bonds won his record seventh NL MVP award in a walk. Capping a season filled with suspicion and success, the San Francisco Giants left fielder became the oldest player to become the MVP of a major North American professional league. The 40-year-old received 24 of 32 first-place votes and 407 points Monday in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America to earn the award for the fourth straight season.

Computers keep Oklahoma No. 2 in BCS poll

Heisman race still wide open

Investigators identify car crash victims

KIMMEL, Ind. -- Investigators have identified all four people killed in a fiery one-car crash over the weekend. The passengers were identified as Joel Bressler, 21, of Elkhart; Joshua Richards, 23, of Millersburg; and Kevin Yoder of Elkhart County. Yoder was also in his early 20s, authorities said. The driver was identified from dental records Monday as Reuben Escobedo of Elkhart, said Noble County Coroner John Brazzell. Escobedo also was in his early 20s, he said.

Team sees highs, lows at Big Ten singles event

Hoosiers plagued by costly penalties

During Saturday's game against Penn State, IU was on the wrong end of eight penalties. The Hoosiers have been plagued with penalties all season long, as they racked up 15 total flags in the last two games alone.

Who you callin' a slacker?

About 11 percent of undergraduates are nerds. That is, according to the latest National Survey of Student Engagement (a study based at IU), 11 percent of undergraduates actually study 25 hours per week prepping for classes, as recommended by their professors. While their slacker counterparts, about 44 percent of undergraduates, spend 10 hours or less hitting the books.

Iran suspends nuclear development program

U.S. forces fight insurgents across Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- U.S. and Iraqi forces fought deadly battles with insurgents across central and northern Iraq on Monday. The worst reported fighting took place in Baqouba, where the military said at least 20 insurgents were killed. Militants hit at least four different U.S. troop convoys with car bombs, wounding nine Americans in and around the Sunni stronghold of Ramadi and in the northern city of Mosul.
