Crime and punishment

In the battle to reduce crime, there seem to be two schools of thought. One, focus on rehabilitation and make prison a livable place. Two, focus on punishment and make prison so horrible that nobody in their right mind would want to go there.

Lawmaker's bill would close some loopholes in Open Door Law

INDIANAPOLIS -- A state lawmaker trying to plug holes in Indiana laws favoring open government wants to ban "serial" meetings and forbid votes on public business by telephone and over the Internet. Legislation that would make these tactics a violation of the Open Door Law passed the state Senate unanimously in February and moved to the House for consideration. "Most governing bodies try very hard, I think, to comply with open-door laws.

Lithgow enjoys villainous 'sleight of hand' in musical

Drama department announces new season

Actors learn to work on a tight budget

On the set of a low-budget film, many of the amenities granted to Hollywood actors seem as far away as a mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif. On this low-budget set, there are no amenities -- all actors are responsible for their own costuming, hair, makeup and morale. Ross Matsuda knows this all too well by now.

University of Colorado president resigns after scandal

DENVER -- University of Colorado President Elizabeth Hoffman announced Monday that she is resigning amid a football recruiting scandal and a national controversy about an activist professor who compared victims of the Sept. 11 attacks to a notorious Nazi. Hoffman, who has been president for five years, told the Board of Regents in a letter that her resignation is effective June 30 or whenever the board names a successor.

When Rick Palmer was 15 years old, he just wanted to look at the stars. After drinking heavily at a party in a barn, he and his friend wandered up to the roof. But their star-gazing plans came to a halt when the roof collapsed, and the two crashed into the barn.
