Buskirk-Chumley shows Ryder films

For those who've grown tired of the usual summer film fare of Hollywood blockbusters that often place special effects over a quality plot, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater is featuring a summer movie series that might be of interest. In conjunction with the Ryder Films, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater is screening critically-acclaimed films that didn't make the standard run at Kerasotes-owned theaters. Buskirk-Chumley Director Danielle McClelland said she believes the series plays an important role in expanding the cinematic palate of Bloomington moviegoers.

Group to host black freshman orientation

A local group is offering an orientation session to help ease the transition to college for IU's black students. IU's Black Student Union is hosting a black freshman orientation at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, Bridgwater Lounge and patio, beginning at 5 p.m. today. Pizza will be served and guest speakers will abound.

Textbook market evolving

In the past decade, the prices of textbooks have increased at four times the rate of inflation. These ever-increasing costs may draw grumbles from many students, but local textbook retailers say increased competition in the industry can be viewed a good thing.

Facebook gets design facelift

Just in time for the advent of the fall semester, everyone's favorite online yearbook and social network and has undergone a revamping. Thefacebook.com re-launched last week with a new layout and page design. The new look, intending to give the site a "less cluttered" look, according to a statement from the Web site's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, is in response to its skyrocketing popularity.

Bloomington residents arrested for vehicle theft

Two men were found on campus with a vehicle containing stolen stereo equipment Thursday morning, according to an IU Police Department report. Bloomington residents Daniel Lane, 21, and Charles Starks, 23, were arrested for vehicle theft and possession of stolen items after IUPD officers found them in the Campus View Apartments parking lot near a car containing car stereo equipment and two checkbooks.

Top-level athletes not safe from deadly heart conditions

In March 1999, during a regional game between No. 1 ranked Bloomington High School South and No. 2 ranked Lawrence North High School, John Stewart took a seat on the bench feeling short of breath. Then his eyes rolled back in his head. A few short moments, the standout Indianapolis senior and Kentucky basketball recruit was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead from heart failure.

Midnight buses to take students to retailer

Odds, ends and no parking space may bring sophomore Lindsey Berry, a resident of Ashton Center, to Midnight Madness at Wal-Mart Friday night. "I really just need some things; I've talked to some people that went last year, and (they) said that stuff is really cheap," Berry said. "Another reason is I'm on a waitlist for parking spaces, and I usually have to find rides to go get stuff."

Hoosiers begin 2005 season with swing through West Coast

INDIANAPOLIS - James Jones has left the Indiana Pacers and completed a sign-and-trade deal with the Phoenix Suns Thursday, Suns president Bryan Colangelo said. Jones' new deal is for four years, with the fourth year at the player's option. Financial terms were not disclosed. The Suns sent the Pacers a second-round draft pick in 2008 in exchange for the 24-year-old Jones, who was a restricted free agent.
