Top-level athletes not safe from deadly heart conditions

In March 1999, during a regional game between No. 1 ranked Bloomington High School South and No. 2 ranked Lawrence North High School, John Stewart took a seat on the bench feeling short of breath. Then his eyes rolled back in his head. A few short moments, the standout Indianapolis senior and Kentucky basketball recruit was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead from heart failure.

Midnight buses to take students to retailer

"I really just need some things; I've talked to some people that went last year, and (they) said that stuff is really cheap," Berry said. "Another reason is I'm on a waitlist for parking spaces, and I usually have to find rides to go get stuff."

Expectations run high for Hoosiers after winningest season on record

Hoosiers begin 2005 season with swing through West Coast

INDIANAPOLIS - James Jones has left the Indiana Pacers and completed a sign-and-trade deal with the Phoenix Suns Thursday, Suns president Bryan Colangelo said. Jones' new deal is for four years, with the fourth year at the player's option. Financial terms were not disclosed. The Suns sent the Pacers a second-round draft pick in 2008 in exchange for the 24-year-old Jones, who was a restricted free agent.

State Supreme Court OKs Baird execution

INDIANAPOLIS - Death-row inmate Arthur Baird II is competent to be executed as scheduled next week for killing his parents in 1985, the Indiana Supreme Court ruled Thursday. The state's high court ruled 3-2 against a stay of execution, saying evidence presented on Baird's behalf did not meet a test set out in a U.S. Supreme Court ruling. That ruling barred states from executing people who are insane, defined as being unaware of the punishment about to be received and the reason for that punishment.

After 3rd deadlock, still no Iraq constitution

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The speaker of Iraq's Parliament announced a one-day extension early Friday in talks on Iraq's new constitution -- a fourth attempt to win Sunni Arab approval. But he said if no agreement is reached, the document would bypass parliament completely and be decided in an Oct. 15 referendum.

Let's hold off classes

Classes begin Monday. But do they have to? Would it kill the board of trustees or the Indiana Commission for Higher Education or Gov. Mitch Daniels if summer break were two weeks longer? The 2005-06 school year will likely be of profound and lasting importance. Rushing into it could bring about disastrous mistakes. Like the carpenters say: "measure twice, cut once." Have we really measured twice, or are we just tossing this year into the old academic band saw?

Lessons from Iran

I have taken quite an interest in the story of two Iranian teens executed for homosexuality and assorted other sundry (and sordid) crimes. For those unfamiliar with the incident, two teenage boys were executed in Iran in July. They were executed for a number of crimes. One of the crimes considered worthy of death: homosexuality. The other: participating in the gang rape of a 13-year-old boy.
