The rich should pay up

If you've been living in one of our many fine local caves recently, you might not know that a pair of hurricanes ripped up much of the U.S. Gulf Coast. Hurricane Rita, and particularly Hurricane Katrina, destroyed huge swaths of property and will cost billions of dollars to clean up. Somebody has to pay to fix up the mess down South. The question is, though, who should foot the bill?

State of University ignores state of students

IU President Adam Herbert delivered his State of the University address yesterday to a primarily adult audience in the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union, and, alas, that audience included too few students. Thus, not surprisingly, Herbert's address was far removed from student issues.

Police report discovery of knives in boy's room

MUNCIE -- Police officers found about 50 knives in the bedroom of a 17-year-old boy who cut a girl's throat and hands during an attack at Muncie Central High School, a detective said.

Greenspan cautions investors

Top al-Qaida official in Iraq killed

Former FEMA director bashes federal, state gov't

Tradition of First Friday begins in downtown area

Bloomington has just added one more reason to thank goodness it's Friday -- at least the first Friday of every month. These Fridays, many businesses in the downtown area are keeping their doors open later and offering promotional deals and events. Downtown Bloomington Inc. first organized this event last month, which is now being called First Friday.

The Atlanta Braves tried to hold off the celebration. It didn't work. The Braves wrapped up their 14th straight division championship Tuesday night while playing the Colorado Rockies, the NL East title assured midway through the game when the second-place Phillies lost to the New York Mets.

IU field hockey earns 1st ever top-10 national ranking

Fresh off its upset of then-No. 6 Michigan State, the IU field hockey team cracked the top 10 yesterday for the first time in program history. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association bumped the Hoosiers up to No. 8 in this week's rankings after being ranked No. 11 last week. The Spartans dropped to No. 9 after IU's 3-2 overtime win this weekend.

Six degrees of allegations

Rafael Palmeiro has done it again. Just when I thought I was free of his finger pointing, forceful denials and 80s-style porn-stache, he jumped right back into the news. It was revealed last week that Palmeiro pointed out teammate Miguel Tejada as a possible reason why he tested positive for the steroid Winstrol earlier this year. Palmeiro claimed a shot of vitamin B12 he received from Tejada earlier this season must have been the cause of the positive test. Um ... Raffy? Give it up. We all know you cheated. Now please just go away, you're only making it worse for yourself.

IU rolls again in final non-conference match

The IU volleyball team bent slightly in its third game, but would not break Tuesday night against in-state rival University of Evansville, claiming a 3-1 victory over the Purple Aces at University Gym (30-27, 30-20, 31-33, 30-19). The win moved IU's record to 8-6 on the season, and dropped Evansville's record to 5-12.

Student denies involvement in hit-and-run

An IU student was arrested after his vehicle allegedly struck another IU student crossing the street near Collins Center Sunday evening, according to IU Police Department reports. Todd Wantz was walking westbound across the intersection of 10th Street and Woodlawn Avenue at about 7 p.m. Sunday when a silver minivan struck him, "forcing" him on top of the hood and then onto the pavement, according to the report. Wantz told police the vehicle was making a right turn onto 10th Street through a red light on Woodlawn. He said in the report he was well into the crosswalk when the vehicle hit him.

Mercury response questioned

Members of the IU worker's union are questioning the Office of Environmental Health and Safety Management's ability to respond quickly and effectively to hazards at IU, such as a recent incident which exposed workers to mercury vapors.

Bringing history to life

When students trek across central campus, passing IU President Adam Herbert's residence, they often do not think about the first Hoosiers who journeyed to class in the mid-1800s. Most don't realize they would have been walking down Second Street toward Seminary Square. The early Hoosiers would have passed a distinctive 1700s Georgian-style house belonging to IU's first president, Andrew Wylie.

IU freshman contracts bacterial meningitis

Ashley Lee, an 18-year-old freshman, was hospitalized and diagnosed with bacterial meningitis prompting a public health alert, University officials said Monday. Lee, who lives in Briscoe Quad, was in her hometown of Terre Haute when she felt ill Friday, causing her to seek medical attention. She is currently in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, said Dr. Rob Hongen, medical director of the IU Health Center.

Herbert to map IU's priorities

Brawn and Beethoven: Local sisters balance muscle, music

Sisters Abigail, Hannah and Sarah Biddle go to church at Martinsville Baptist Tabernacle and are enrolled in IU's pre-college music program. Abigail, 17, plays the harp and sings in church choir. Hannah, 15, plays the cello and piano and wants to become a musical score composer. Sarah, 13, plays the harp and the piano and is the baby of the family.
