Roberts becomes 17th chief justice

WASHINGTON -- John G. Roberts Jr., a conservative protégé of the late William H. Rehnquist, succeeded him Thursday and became the nation's youngest chief justice in two centuries, winning support from more than three-fourths of the Senate after promising he would be no ideologue. Roberts, at 50, becomes the 17th chief justice, presiding over a Supreme Court that seems as divided as the nation over abortion and other tumultuous social issues. The court opens a new term on Monday.

1st Hindu temple in Indiana to serve nearly 3,000 families

INDIANAPOLIS -- Plans are underway for the state's first Hindu temple, a sprawling, elaborate structure dedicated to worship of a dozen deities. The temple's construction on the city's east side underlines the growth of Hindu population and culture in the city, The Indianapolis Star reported in a Thursday story.

Mile-long walk to raise breast cancer awareness

Barbara Joseph's inspiration for the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk came from her good friend Melody Martin, a breast cancer survivor who founded the walk. "This is her passion," Joseph said of her friend. The event is not focused on raising money; instead, the main goal of the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk Saturday is to raise awareness about breast cancer. The first 1,000 walkers will receive a free T-shirt. Participants can walk without paying a fee or giving a donation, though donations will be accepted. Sponsors, such as Bloomington Hospital Regional Cancer Institute and Southern Indiana Radiological Associates will donate $200 for each walker and have already donated enough money to cover all of the walk's expenses.

IU awaits money to remove 7th Street fence

The chain link fence paddock on Seventh Street next to the IU Auditorium will continue to stand until IU gets the money to renovate the area, said Bob Meadows, the University architect. IU erected the fence in the fall of 1997 as a staging area for construction at the Auditorium, Meadows said. When the renovation was completed several years ago, the University didn't have the money to replace the fence with an alternative, but didn't want to reopen Seventh Street to through traffic, he said.

U.S. House leader indicted, steps down

WASHINGTON -- A Texas grand jury Wednesday indicted Rep. Tom DeLay and two political associates on charges of conspiracy in a campaign finance scheme, forcing the House majority leader to temporarily relinquish his post. A defiant DeLay insisted he was innocent and called the prosecutor a "partisan fanatic." "I have done nothing wrong. ... I am innocent," DeLay told a Capitol Hill news conference during which he criticized the Texas prosecutor, Ronnie Earle, repeatedly. DeLay, R-Texas, said the charges amounted to "one of the weakest and most baseless indictments in American history."

Surplus spent on recruitment abroad

Karishma Babani, a senior studying biology, said if you mentioned IU in Dubai, a city in the United Arab Emirates, a typical response would be: "Oh yeah, I know where that is." Even as far as thousands of miles away, IU has an upstanding reputation that draws international students, such as Babani, to Bloomington. To continue the University's good reputation abroad, IU-Bloomington Interim Chancellor Ken Gros Louis announced at the Sept. 20 Bloomington Faculty Council meeting that for the first time, IU will begin to actively recruit international students and top-ranking Indiana residents.

Social, racial integration remains key to diversity

UITS to unveil Web security posters parodying 50s films

During the month of October, IU will be participating in the National Cyber Security Awareness Campaign, warning students of personal computing risks through a series of posters imitating those of 1950s horror and science fiction films. Each week, a different security risk will be introduced to each of the eight IU campuses to alert students and faculty alike of the dangers that lurk throughout the Internet.

'Apprentice' star to speak tonight

Before Donald Trump fires yet another contestant on tonight's episode of NBC's "The Apprentice," an alumnus of the reality show will share his boardroom experiences during a free lecture in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union. Kwame Jackson, the first-season runner-up, will speak at 7 p.m.

Emcees exchange verbal blows to benefit hurricane relief efforts

Hip Hop Congress is sponsoring an emcee battle at 6:45 p.m. today at the Collins Center courtyard. If enough spaces are available, aspiring verbal warriors will be allowed to sign up on the spot. Midwest performers DJ Brakez and Halfblown will deejay and play host to the event. Proceeds from T-shirt sales will contribute to Hurricane Katrina relief funds.

Pick-A-Prof drops fees for podcasts of lectures

A Texas-based company that had been selling mp3 recordings of course lectures to students at two universities dropped its $5-per-lecture charge last week. The pilot service, being tested in four large lecture classes at Texas A&M and University of Texas at Austin, now allows students to download those same audio recordings online for free at the Web site [www.Pick-A-Prof.com], said Karen Bragg, director of university relations at Pick-A-Prof.

This letter is in response to Chris Engel's complaint about the athletic department's disregard for non-student athletes ("Athletics department drops the ball," Sept. 22).
