Greek revolution

Fraternities and sororities often get a bad rap from those outside the greek system, sometimes deservedly so. For example, the criticism directed at Delta Zeta sorority was justified when the DePauw chapter evicted 23 women from its house who were overweight or of color. Critics suspected they did this out of fear of the negative stereotype those women were giving to the house. Fraternities and sororities should take responsibility for poor judgment ranging from white fraternity brothers in blackface to demeaning and deadly hazing incidents.

Spun off to death

·

As an extremely rabid fan of television, I will defend the major networks in any capacity, even when their actions are a bit sketchy. Recently, however, a few decisions have caused me to question exactly what the hell is going on with these bigwigs. My frustrations primarily stem from the sudden outbursts of adaptations of “spin-offs.” In the last week, rumors have been abounding about two new spin-offs currently in development by FOX and NBC respectively. The first is an offshoot of FOX’s “hit” “Prison Break.”

The price of rights

·

If I were writing this column a year ago, I probably would have opened with some sarcastic comment about how George W. Bush should be a president who cares about human rights for Halloween. It seems, however, that Bush did something incredibly historic a few weeks ago: He became the first sitting U.S. president to appear publicly with the Dalai Lama.

Suffer the children

·

The United States government is going to spend $720 million rearranging rubble in Iraq today. It spent $720 million yesterday, and it will spend another $720 million tomorrow. At this rate, 262.8 billion of this year’s tax dollars will be spent by Dec. 31, lining Dick Cheney’s pockets with blood money. Meanwhile, in a recent study by Johns Hopkins University, it was determined that 1,700 American high schools – almost 12 percent of the total – have earned the dubious distinction of “dropout factories.” This label applies when consistently less than 60 percent of freshmen get to the end of their senior year. Clearly, Dubya couldn’t care less whether children are left behind or not.
