A Thanksgiving abroad

·

CANTERBURY, England - It’s easy to imagine the type of questions one would encounter during the first few weeks of living in a foreign country. But there was one question I wasn’t expecting to come from my international roommates and friends with such genuine curiosity and interest.

Hoosiers show glimpses of past and future in loss

·

The 2009 Hoosiers preached from August to November about the changes in the program and about how they were going to make football relevant at IU. In a 38-21 loss to Purdue, that progress was hard to find.

IU loses to Missouri 76-71

·

For the first time this season, the Hoosiers found out what it felt like to lose a game by falling 76-71 to the Missouri Tigers on Sunday.

Senior night special for Hall, '09 Hoosier squad

·

The Hoosiers (15-17, 4-14) dropped a four-set loss to Ohio State (22-9, 10-8) on Friday and nearly took two sets away from No. 1 Penn State (30-0, 18-0) before falling in three on Saturday at University Gym.

Hoosiers gradually on way back

·

If there was ever any doubt, IU’s eighth-place finish in Puerto Rico pretty much confirmed it – restoring IU basketball will be a long-term project for IU coach Tom Crean.

'Tis the season

·

The recession has definitely adversely affected the number of Americans that will get to sit down this week with a 20-something pound turkey. If you’re one of those people who is so lucky, consider doing some small things to help those who aren’t as fortunate.

The Indiana Daily Student

Thanks and giving

·

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, perhaps we should focus on what this holiday teaches us and how we can apply that lesson throughout the year – not just when surrounded by family and football.

The Indiana Daily Student

What charity should cost

·

It’s both good and bad that there are so many existing programs and charities founded to help the poor, but simply giving to an established organization doesn’t necessarily mean you’re “helping” in the true sense of the word.

The Indiana Daily Student

Systematic disconnect

·

While soup kitchens and Meals on Wheels programs promote more interaction between the rich and poor, they are temporary and do not promote a habit of responsibility and consciousness that would form the basis of a more compassionate approach to the social barriers that homeless individuals do on a daily basis.

Overseas study to help students

·

The DuBois Institute, a public boarding school focused on the educational advancement of Indiana public school students, would be located in Ghana and would eventually house and educate approximately 400 students grades six through 12.

2012

It’s the end of the world as we know it (and I don’t feel fine)

·

Roland Emmerich was smart to not make “2012” about religion. Everyone knows bigger box office numbers and fewer controversies come when the antagonist in an apocalypse scenario is a white, conservative politician and not God. But I imagine the whole religion thing wasn’t forgotten. It’s just the rest of the movie is so lowest common denominator, any theology would just be above this material.

Robbie Williams

Reality revives the pop star

·

For those of you that follow British tabloids, you’d know that Robbie Williams has had a well-documented breakdown in the public eye for the past five years.

OneRepublic

OneRepublic going up

·

When a band from nowhere drops an overspun mega-hit like “Apologize,” they often fall off the map, or at the very least, produce a woefully inadequate followup.

Norah Jones

Eclectic chill

·

You’d expect an album called “The Fall” to have a sense of chaos within it. But, we are talking about Norah Jones here.

Leona Lewis

Lewis can’t echo her cohorts

·

Though former “The X Factor” winner Leona Lewis is probably more talented than any of her stateside “American Idol” counterparts, her debut album “Spirit” felt oversatured with sappy ballads — just like most other winners’ first forays into pop.

Kris Allen

‘Idol’ fans got it right

·

The first album for an “American Idol” victor is always difficult to manage because the swell of hype and a producers’ “vision” can conflict with artists trying to find their way. For season eight winner Kris Allen, the road is even tougher since the man he somehow defeated, Adam Lambert, became a cultural phenomenon during his time on the program.
