Step Show Controversy

Step team shares 1st in national finals after racial controversy

ATLANTA — After days of controversy over a white group’s win in a step competition, sponsor Coca-Cola said Thursday the second-place team, IU's Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, will share top honors. A YouTube video of the winning performance by a group of Zeta Tau Alphas from the University of Arkansas generated hundreds of comments, some of them inflammatory.

Obama tries to maintain middle-class connection

President Barack Obama grew up experiencing the hardships of poverty and divorced parents. He is no stranger to the struggles of a middle-class family, whether during economic downturn or emotional turmoil. In 1988, he entered Harvard Law School and became a Harvard Law Review editor. He served as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School for 12 years, becoming engaged in community service and civil rights law.  His background is rooted in middle-class America. So why do “everyday Americans” claim to see him as detached from their concerns, as an elitist?

Ex-officer pleads guilty in Katrina killing probe

In Hurricane Katrina’s chaotic aftermath, police shot six people — killing two — as they crossed a bridge. For years the case was a shocking symbol of the confusion and violence that swept through the flooded city. On Wednesday, it became a mark of shame for the police department. Michael Lohman, a retired lieutenant who supervised the department’s probe of the shootings, pled guilty to organizing a cover-up to conceal that police gunned down unarmed civilians.

Separate spheres operate between men and women in Ghana

Living as a female in the United States, I often take for granted how equally I am treated. Sure, there is the occasional sexist remark or rude gesture, but in general men treat me like an equal.However, at the University of Ghana in Legon, men feel it’s their duty to hoot and holler at women merely for walking around campus.

In time, Hoosiers should be fine

Many of you are probably upset with how the Hoosiers are playing, especially of late. You might be frustrated with the players. You might be frustrated with Crean. But if anyone expected a quick fix in Crean’s attempt to right the S.S. Hoosier ship through these “uncharted waters,” then you’ve gone off the deep end.

Lack of depth key to IU losses

IU is missing lots of weapons — a sharpshooter, a big man and a leader. Even coach Tom Crean, who said his eyesight has deteriorated since joining the Hoosiers, can see that. But the team is missing something bigger than one individual: depth.

Jazz quintet honors jazz legend Armstrong with tribute

The Canadian Brass quintet took the audience by surprise when they paraded down the left aisle of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater to take the stage Wednesday. The group marched on stage and played a tribute to legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong.

Outdoor Adventures settles in Eigenmann space

As a troop leader for IU Outdoor Adventures, junior Jack Brumbaugh guides adventure troops, teaches classes through the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and aids in outdoor safety. With the program’s move to Eigenmann Hall, Brumbaugh said there are more resources available for the trips because all of the equipment is in one area.

Gaming for Haiti: hobby turns into help

Video games can be a great way to relax and unwind after class for some students. But today, students can do more than relax; they can help Haitians in need by picking up a video-game controller.  Iota Phi Theta fraternity, in collaboration with student EA Games brand representative and junior Latif Alam, has organized the 2010 Haiti Relief Videogame Tournament.
