Report: Hundreds forced into labor, sex in Ohio

About 1,000 American-born children are forced into the sex trade in Ohio every year and about 800 immigrants are sexually exploited and pushed into sweatshop-type jobs, a new report on human trafficking in the state said Wednesday.

Art fair ‘expresses soul,’ raises money

The Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center Grand Hall echoed with slaps, thuds and chants Wednesday when four dancers in rubber rain boots fixed with loose bottle caps led a crowd in a traditional African Gumboot Dance. The dance was just one part of the eighth-annual Black History Month Art Fair sponsored by the FASE Mentoring Program, the African American Arts Institute and the Office of Multicultural Initiatives.

Rock-opera musical tells story of Jesus’ last week on earth

On Wednesday, the IU Auditorium hosted an audience ready to see Jesus rock. “Jesus Christ Superstar” opened Wednesday to an appreciative crowd eager to escape the frigid weather outside. The show, one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous productions, is a retelling of the final days of Jesus’ life – beginning with the preparation for his arrival in Jerusalem and ending with his Crucifixion.

Buckeyes roll past Hoosiers

Basketball isn’t known as a contact sport, and the more passive team lost in IU’s 69-52 faltering against Ohio State on Wednesday. Similar to the first contest on Jan. 6 in Columbus, Ohio, IU struggled against the larger, more physical Buckeyes.

IU named in list of top Peace Corps contributors

With more than 40 participants, IU made its way onto a new list of schools with large contributions to the competitive international program. IU ranked No. 25 on the Peace Corps Top Colleges 2010 list when compared to other schools with more than 15,000 undergraduate students. The University of Washington ranked No. 1 with 101 students involved in the Peace Corps, while IU had 42 students involved.

Documentary shows stories of ‘undocumented youth'

Students watched the documentary “Papers: Stories of Undocumented Youth” along with 20 other students Wednesday at the IU Maurer School of Law. The documentary, written and directed by Anne Galisky, told the stories of four students facing high school graduation without legal citizenship status.

Junior Faculty Award recognizes research

Five faculty members received the IU Outstanding Junior Faculty Award for their dedication to teaching, research and service. Winners were Brian D’Onofrio, Christiane Gruber, Ho-fung Hung, Daniel Kearns and Marissa Moorman.

Hoosiers outplayed in big loss

The NBA All-Star Game 2010 Weekend won’t begin until Friday, but Wednesday’s IU and Ohio State game at Assembly Hall had the looks of it. There was plenty of dunking – alley-oops, two-handed flushes and a near-perfect windmill attempt by Ohio State’s William Buford. There were a fair amount of 3-pointers shot.

The Bloomington Area Arts Council Board voted unanimously Tuesday to expand the governing board by recruiting locally.

Amy C. Wolff, a graduate student in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, is working with a non-profit organization, the ZyOzy Foundation, to raise $30,000 to benefit the CARE Earthquake Relief Fund. How is she doing it? Through song.

BPD officer’s merit, performance awarded

During undercover operations, Bloomington Police Department Detective William Jeffers was able to make drug contacts. These same contacts were able to assist him in charging four men in the murder of Mario Wright, which occurred July 19, 2009.For this reason, Jeffers was named BPD’s Officer of the Year.
