As the semester winds down, students are finishing up big projects and preparing themselves for break. Some student filmmakers at the Media School and the School of Art, Architecture + Design get the chance to display their hard work to their peers and show how they see the world through a video camera.

Swiss-American filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe will be visiting the IU Cinema this week to be present for two showings of his recent documentaries, a screening of a cult horror classic and give a lecture.

Sara Driver is a filmmaker who tells her stories in ways that many people believe to be new and different. She said her movies often reference folk tales and mythology from other parts of the world and balance the rigidity of a normal storyline with the flow of poetry and art.

Blaze Foley was a famous singer-songwriter who worked with the likes of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. He wrote songs such as “If Only I Could Fly” and “Clay Pigeons.” His website describes his music as thought-provoking, intense and humorous. He died in 1989, but for many of his supporters, his legacy still lives on.

Charles and Ray Eames, now deceased, were considered to be an inseparable unit in the 1960s. In one way, they designed and produced art together, from furniture to houses, and even short films. In another way, they were a married couple who worked together constantly throughout their relationship.

The lights dim, and the audience is plunged into pitch black — the moments before a film screening are always the same. One thing that was special about the screening Nov. 2 was that the films shown were all created by graduate students at IU.

One of the ways to step into another person’s shoes is to listen to them tell stories about their lives. The Human Library at The Monroe County Public Library is an event that allowed attendees to learn about other people and what discrimination or struggles they might face in their day-to-day lives.

Film has been around since the 1890s, and a film archivist’s mission is to preserve them, which in turn preserves history. On the IU campus, film is kept in the IU Libraries Moving Image Archive, inside of the Herman B Wells Library.
