The At First Sight New Play Festival will bring David Davila’s brand-new musical “Vox Pop! a post-democratic musical” to Ruth N. Halls Theatre Feb. 9-17. Davila, a third year IU MFA playwriting candidate, wrote the book, music and lyrics for this musical.

E. Danielle Butler gave a presentation about Jessie Maple Patton, the first Black female director and camera operator to be inducted into New York Camera Operator’s Union. In addition to her presentation, Ja Quita Joy Roberts, the Finance and Office Administrator at the Black Film Center & Archive secured a proclamation from Kerry Thomson, mayor of Bloomington, declaring Feb. 1 as “Mrs. Jessie Maple Patton Day.”

Indiana men’s tennis’ matchup against Boise State University on Feb. 4 didn’t spare any drama. Much of the match was filled with emotional outbursts over questions of officiating and sportsmanship, whether that be the coaches or the players. However, the Hoosiers prevailed through the dramatics and sealed a 4-1 victory, capping off four matches in five days. The Hoosiers undefeated week jolts their record to 6-2.

Director Jenny McKnight’s pared down version of Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure” is currently being presented by the IU Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance in the Studio Theatre. The play opened Jan. 19 and runs through Jan. 27. While the show is currently sold out, those wishing to view the performance are advised to arrive at the theater 45 minutes before showtime to place their name on a waitlist.

As part of the IU Global Film Festival series, IU Cinema screened the documentary, “Descendant” at 7 p.m., Jan. 30 inside IU Cinema. It gave a voice to those descended from the last known ship that brought stolen Africans into the United States. Discovering the shipwreck was simply the first step. “Descendant” is about so much more.

I didn’t seriously think about skincare until I entered high school. Sure, I washed and moisturized my skin with drugstore brands like Cetaphil and CeraVe, but by no means did I adopt a regimen of toners and serums until much later. Given my adolescent self’s lack of knowledge on skincare and beauty, it’s absolutely wild to see how intense and thorough the skincare and makeup routines of kids are today.

One thing about me — I love bad movies. But in my never-ending quest to find the next great bad movie, I sometimes stumble upon films undeserving of this reputation at all. I won’t call the older films on this list “ahead of their time” – sometimes a film’s datedness is what makes it loveable – but their comedic sensibilities do seem better suited for modern audiences. Of course, taste is subjective, but the five films that I’ve chosen to highlight feel distinctly misunderstood for their time.
