The 1968 Columbia University protests represent the pinnacle of student-led activism. These protests were invoked for two main reasons. First was resistance against the proposal to build a gymnasium for the university which would lead to the displacement of the local minority population of Harlem, seen as a move toward segregation. Second was a demand for the university to cut ties with the Institute for Defense Analyses, a think tank affiliated with the U.S. Department of Defense — which at that time was involved in the bloody war of Vietnam. Opposition to this war was the primary reason they demanded divestment from IDA.

When I was young, I didn’t understand the importance of being healthy and what advantages it brought. Healthiness felt like a cruel idea, because what could be good for me that wouldn't let me eat candy and watch TV?

For some, it happens slowly: the regard for things such as giving out treats on Valentine’s Day, or trick-or-treating on Halloween, is gradually coaxed out of that part of your brain labeled “important things.” For others, it occurs like the shattering of a window: One well-placed pebble brings down the entire illusion. Perhaps you caught your guardian eating Santa’s cookies, or woke up on Easter Day to find that the bunny hadn’t come, and instead, it was time to have a serious conversation about holiday mascots. Either way, every one of us experiences that cruel transition from childhood to adulthood, characterized by a loss of wonder and the increasing presence of a monotonous cycle of responsibilities. You come to forget what day of the year you must wear green to avoid getting pinched, but are intensely aware of when your bills are due.

We got to view a very special cosmic event on Monday. According to National Eclipse, the next total solar eclipse won’t happen in the United States until 2044. This got me thinking about how much can happen in 20 years. What will we have discovered, what problems will we face, and what will we solve? It would have been hard to guess 20 years ago how the world would look today. I mean, I wasn’t even born 20 years ago. So, as we wait for the next eclipse, let's look forward to the next 20.
