Mike Conway of Andretti Autosport waits on Pit Road to take his first of three Bump Day qualification attempts Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Conway, who qualified for the 2010 race but did not finish due to a crash during the final lap that resulted in a broken leg back injury, did not manage to qualify for the 2011 race.

Pit crew members of Scott Dixon pull his car along Gasoline Alley toward the garages after rain put the track under yellow and closed down operations for the third time during Bump Day on Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Dixon managed to qualify in second during Saturday's qualifications however, his crew had moved the car out to Pit Road to secure Dixon's spot in the practice line.

Pit crew members for Ryan Briscoe push his car back to the garage after Briscoe managed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 with a four-lap cumulative speed of 224.639 MPH on Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Briscoe wrecked on Saturday shortly before qualifications damaging his regular car beyond repair. The car he drove during Saturday's regular qualifcations and Bump Day qualifications was the back-up car.

Crew members prepare Charlie Kimball of Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing to take his Bump Day qualification attempt Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Kimball managed to qualify with a four-lap cumulative speed of 224.499 MPH. Kimball is the first driver to race in the Indianapolis 500 with Type 1 diabetes in the race's 100 year history.

Dario Franchitti of Target Chip Ganassi Racing waits in Gasoline Alley to begin his "fast nine" qualification run for the pole position Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Franchitti was clocking some of the fastest speeds of the day, when his car began to slow down and then came to a stop during his fourth lap. It was reported that the car ran out of fuel. Franchitti's teammate Scott Dixon also ran out of fuel as he pulled into pit lane after managing to finish his "fast nine" run.

Members of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway safety crew wait for the track to dry under the front stretch pagoda on Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A rain shower around 3:30 p.m. forced qualification attempts to stop. However, since the rain shower was very short track officials managed to dry the track off enough in order to have an abbreviated version of the "fast nine shoot-out" to see who would take the pole.

Ed Carpenter of Dollar General/Sarah Fisher Racing speeds through turn one during his first qualification attempt of Pole Day on Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Carpenter qualified with a fast enough speed to compete with the "fast nine" for the pole position. His "fast nine" run started out very strong but he narrowly managed to avoid a crash during his second lap and lost his speed. His finished his "fast nine" qualification run with a four-lap cumulative speed of 225.121 MPH putting him in eighth position in the starting grid.

Simon de Silvestro of Nuclear Clean Energy HVM Racing heads into turn one during her first qualifying attempt Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Silvestro was cleared to drive her car for qualifications by the INDYCAR medical team shortly before morning practice took place at the track. Although it took all three of her attempts, Silvestro managed to qualify in the 24th position.

Castroneves intended to redo his qualification attempt in order to reach a faster speed and move up in the starting grid, but was prevented from doing so due to a brief rain shower that closed the track for about 90 minutes.
